Switch Telecom Review

Switch Telecom is a Sandton cloud PBX and SIP trunk supplier that has run its own ICASA-licensed voice network since 2007 and publishes every price, month-to-month with free installation. It is built for businesses that want the whole bill in writing before a sales call.

Direct answer

Is Switch Telecom worth shortlisting?

Yes. Switch publishes every number a buyer needs, from the R260 block of ten extensions to the per-minute call rates, which almost nobody else in the category does. The trade-off is that the switchboard cannot be bought alone, so the headline rate is never the whole bill. Ask for a quote that separates the switchboard, the trunk and the call package before you compare it with anyone.

Quick verdict

Wins on the spreadsheet, as long as you fill in the whole spreadsheet

Switch sells four things: a hosted switchboard, a SIP trunk, a single VoIP line for small offices, and a cloud session border controller that puts Microsoft Teams on its network. All four are priced on the website to the cent, with nothing hidden behind “from”, and that completeness is the product: a buyer can model the bill before speaking to anyone.

The structural caveat is that the switchboard does not work without a Switch SIP trunk underneath it, so ten extensions cost about R360 a month before a single call, not the R260 on the tile. Two things the site does not offer: an uptime figure, and native connectors into Salesforce, HubSpot or Zendesk; CRM calling is click-to-dial from the softphone instead.

Commercially this suits a business that would rather do the arithmetic itself than take a bundle on trust.

Pros and watch-outs

What Switch does well, and where to push back at quote stage.

Pros
  • Free installation and month-to-month terms on every service, with no minimum contract
  • Browser and mobile softphones with every extension, up to three devices on one number
  • A choice of 30-second or per-second call billing, priced separately for long and short calls
  • Microsoft Teams calling at one flat monthly fee for the company rather than per user
  • Reseller and wholesale programmes exist for IT partners who want to sell voice under their own brand
Watch-outs
  • Sold in blocks of ten with a trunk required underneath, so the entry price is higher than the tile
  • No uptime figure or service credit is published; if a tender needs one, negotiate it
  • No native CRM connectors; Salesforce, HubSpot or Zendesk users dial from the softphone
  • Support is Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm; weekends and public holidays are standby cover on a Business or Corporate SLA
  • No contact-centre tier with a predictive dialler, dispositions or workforce management

Score breakdown

Five categories that decide whether Switch earns a slot on your shortlist. The headline is the weighted sum, so you can check the arithmetic.

Pricing value9.2

R260 per block of ten extensions, free installation, month-to-month and both call packages published to the cent. Held back because the block model and the mandatory trunk mean the true entry cost is about R360, not the number on the tile.

Feature set8.8

Hosted switchboard with IVR, queues, recording and reporting, softphones on browser and mobile, a SIP trunk for existing PBXs, and a cloud SBC that connects Microsoft Teams, Freshdesk and Twilio. Held back because CRM integration is click-to-dial rather than native, and there is no contact-centre tier.

Customer reviews7.2

4.8 across 71 Google reviews on the Bryanston listing, well above the South African average for the platform. Held back because the distribution is polarised, 67 five-star and 4 one-star with nothing between, and HelloPeter carries no computed index.

Reliability and uptime8.9

An ICASA licence held since 2007, a voice network the company runs itself with multiple points of presence and interconnects, and multi-branch failover included. Held back because no uptime figure or service credit is published.

Support quality8.7

A toll-free line, free remote support, and public reviews that name consultants and praise resolution speed. Held back because published hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, with standby cover outside them only on an SLA.

“Staff are courteous, friendly and knowledgeable, queries are resolved quickly, they reply to emails timeously, just an all round highly efficient and professional service provider. I don’t even want to compare pricing with other providers, I’m that pleased with the service I receive from Switch.”

Read the sample with its shape in mind. Seventy-one reviews is a fair base for a business voice supplier, but 67 of them are five stars and 4 are one star, with nothing between; the four describe billing and cancellation friction. HelloPeter lists the company under two profiles and computes no index for either, so Google is the only readable signal.

The Switch product line

What you can actually put on the contract.

Voice

Hosted Switchboard and SIP trunk

The switchboard carries IVR and auto-attendant, ring groups and queues, optional call recording, voicemail to email and call detail reports, on a switchboard that runs over the company’s own trunk. The trunk also sells on its own to businesses keeping an existing PBX, and multi-branch failover is included.

Integration

Cloud SBC and click-to-dial

The cloud session border controller connects Microsoft Teams, Freshdesk and Twilio to the Switch network for a flat monthly fee. CRM calling runs through the click-to-dial function of the browser softphone rather than native connectors. Enterprise customers can ask for API access as a scoped project; no public developer documentation is published.

Small office and channel

VoIP Line, hardware and partners

A single VoIP line covers a home office or a shop counter. Grandstream desk and cordless handsets are sold outright from the company’s own shop, and most SIP phones and softphones work without them. Reseller and wholesale programmes let IT partners sell the same network under their own brand.

Choose Switch if

  • You are the kind of buyer who builds the spreadsheet before the sales call
  • You have ten extensions or more and know your busiest-hour call volume
  • Owning the network, rather than reselling one, is on your tender checklist
  • You are standardising on Microsoft Teams and want calling billed per company, not per user

Consider another if

  • Your sales team lives inside Salesforce, HubSpot or Zendesk and needs a native dialler
  • You run an outbound contact centre that needs a predictive dialler and dispositions
  • Your tender requires a published uptime number with service credits
  • You need staffed support at night and on weekends without an SLA add-on

Alternatives to compare

Calls included

Voys

7.6

The opposite pricing model: one price per user with national calls included and no trunk to size. Quote it if you would rather pay more per seat for a bill that never moves.

Bundled tiers

Wanatel

7.5

Three published tiers from R225 for five extensions, with per-second billing and free inter-branch calls built in. Quote it if you have fewer than ten extensions and the block model does not fit.

Managed platform

TRUENAV

7.6

R55 per extension with the trunk, 24/7 remote support and installation included, on its own platform or on 3CX. Quote it if you want support hours and setup folded into one number.

ICASA licensing

Switch holds its own ECS and ECNS licences, first issued in 2007, and is not operating under another carrier’s exemption. Ask for the licence numbers on the quote.

Numbering and porting

Geographic numbers port at R160 each, or R40 a number plus a R660 base charge for a managed range. Ask for the porting date in writing before you cancel the old line.

Support hours

Toll-free 0800 060 100 and free remote support, Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm; weekends and public holidays are standby on a Business or Corporate SLA. Ask what that SLA costs.

Contract terms

Every published service is month-to-month with free installation and no minimum term. Confirm the notice period, and that handsets bought from the shop are yours from day one.

FAQ

Short answers for the questions buyers typically ask before requesting quotes.

How does Switch’s block-pricing model actually work?

Switch publishes one Hosted Switchboard tier: R260 per 10 extensions per month, excluding VAT, with a Switch VoIP SIP Trunk priced separately on top. The price covers the block rather than the seat, so the effective per-extension cost stays at R26 as you scale. Ten extensions cost R260 and twenty cost R520. To that you add the trunk, from R100 a month for 4 concurrent channels; the switchboard does not work without one, so a ten-extension site starts at about R360 a month before calls.

Does Switch integrate with Microsoft Teams?

Yes. Switch publishes a Cloud SBC for Microsoft Teams Direct Routing at R900 a month flat regardless of user count, with an extra domain at R220. The setup needs a Switch VoIP SIP Trunk plus a Microsoft Teams Phone Standard add-on licence per user on the Microsoft side.

Does Switch Telecom require a contract?

No. Every published Switch service runs month-to-month, with no long-term lock-in and free installation across the product line.

Is Switch ICASA licensed?

Yes. Switch’s first ICASA operating licence was issued in 2007. The company operates its own voice network with multiple points of presence and interconnects across South Africa.

What hardware works with Switch?

Switch supports most SIP handsets and softphones, and a browser softphone and a mobile softphone come with every extension at no extra charge. Grandstream desktop and cordless handsets are sold outright from Switch’s own shop from R897 including VAT.

How do Switch’s outbound call rates work?

Switch publishes two outbound call packages. Package 1 bills in 30-second increments with a 60-second minimum at 24c to landlines and 43c to mobiles excluding VAT, suited to longer calls. Package 2 bills per second from the first second at 26c to landlines and 52c to mobiles, suited to short confirmation and dispatch calls. Unlimited options also exist: lines at R160 and R300, and trunks at R1,000, R2,500 and R5,000 for 4, 8 and 16 concurrent calls, covering South African local, national and mobile calls plus selected international destinations.
