Prices were re-checked in October 2026 at FirstShop, tech.co.za and Laptop Direct, and include VAT; PoE switches are extra. Four models (the Yealink SIP-T43U, SIP-T54W and SIP-T57W, and the Poly Edge E300) were out of stock, so the price shown is the last one listed. It connects to your office network via Ethernet or Wi-Fi, registers with your cloud PBX or VoIP provider, and handles calls using the same connection your team already uses for email and cloud apps. Problem: Buying a handset for every desk costs money that a softphone or app may save.
People who spend the day on calls often prefer a handset: physical buttons, and a phone that keeps working when the computer restarts.
Decide: which staff need a handset, then put everyone else on the softphone or app your phone system includes.
Problem: Line keys cost money, and a 16-line phone on a single-line desk is wasted spend.
Decide: count the lines and busy-lamp keys each role uses today, and buy to that number.
Problem: Without Power over Ethernet each phone needs its own adapter and socket, and it drops in a power cut unless its power source is on a UPS.
With PoE, one UPS on the network switch keeps every phone up during load shedding, instead of a UPS at every desk.
Do this: make PoE a requirement, then check that your office switch has PoE ports, or budget for a PoE switch or injectors.
Problem: A Wi-Fi phone depends on your wireless network's coverage and load at each desk.
Decide: wired where there is a network port at the desk; Wi-Fi or DECT only where staff move around or cabling is not possible.
Problem: Bigger screens, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth multiply the price without changing call quality on a basic desk.
Decide: pay for colour screens, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth only where a named person will use them.
Problem: A phone your provider does not support may not auto-configure, and support may refuse to troubleshoot it.
Ask: your phone system provider to confirm the exact model is supported and auto-provisioned before you buy.
The short version: match line count and PoE to your needs, confirm your phone system provider supports the model, and don't pay for colour screens and Bluetooth a desk will never use.

From a regulatory standpoint, the handset itself does not need an ICASA licence — but the VoIP provider you connect it to must hold an Electronic Communications Service (ECS) or Electronic Communications Network Service (ECNS) licence from the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa. Buying a phone is the easy part; verifying that the provider behind your dial tone is properly licensed is the part that protects your business if something goes wrong.
