Ilitha Telecoms Review

Ilitha sells prepaid, uncapped Wi-Fi over its own fibre network in Mdantsane, bought by the day, week or month with no contract and topped up with a Flash voucher from the corner shop. It suits a household inside the coverage area that wants to pay as it goes. It is not built for a business that needs a fixed line, a static IP or a service commitment.

Direct answer

Is Ilitha Telecoms worth signing up for?

If you live where its network runs and want home internet you can buy a day at a time, yes: R10 buys a day of uncapped access for up to three devices, and nothing renews unless you top up. If you run a business, look elsewhere. Ilitha publishes no business product, no fixed IP and no uptime commitment, and every plan tops out at 20 Mbps per device.

Quick verdict

Pay-as-you-go township fibre that is easy to buy and hard to rely on

Ilitha Telecommunications was set up to connect communities the big ISPs skip. It builds fibre into homes in Mdantsane and runs the network as a mesh, so a customer can pick up Ilitha Wi-Fi from connected homes up and down the street. Access is sold like airtime: a day, a week, 30 days or 60 days, paid with a 1ForYou Flash voucher, at Shoprite, Pep or Ackermans, or by card and EFT in the web portal. Plans differ by how many devices can connect, from three on Amaya to unlimited on the Ekhaya premium plan.

The pricing model is the strongest part of the offer. There is no contract, no credit check and no data cap, and the Product Terms say prices include VAT. In February 2025 Ilitha announced investment from Meridiam to take the network to 500,000 low-income homes, starting in the Eastern Cape, so the footprint should grow.

What holds the score down is everything a buyer cannot check: no uptime commitment, an acceptable use policy that allows throughput limits and port blocks, a single speed, and a Google listing where most recent written reviews describe dropped connections and slow fixes.

Pros and watch-outs

What Ilitha gets right for its market, and what to know before you top up.

Pros
  • Every price is on the website, from R10 for a day to R450 for 30 days on 15 devices
  • No contract, no debit order and nothing that renews by itself
  • Uncapped, with no fair usage policy applied today
  • Top up with a Flash voucher at a spaza shop or at Shoprite, Pep and Ackermans
  • Mesh design lets customers pick up Ilitha Wi-Fi beyond their own front door
Watch-outs
  • Coverage is Mdantsane only, according to Ilitha’s own FAQ
  • One speed for everyone: up to 20 Mbps per device, with no faster tier
  • Two pages on ilitha.com show different prices for the same products
  • The acceptable use policy lets Ilitha limit throughput or block ports and protocols, and it may add a fair usage policy on notice
  • No support hours or uptime commitment are published

Score breakdown

Five categories, weighted and added up, so you can see exactly where Ilitha’s 5.3 comes from.

Pricing value7.5

A full public rate card, prepaid with no contract, uncapped, and daily access from R10. Held back because the fibre page and the Product Terms list different prices, and every plan stops at 20 Mbps per device.

Feature set4.5

Plans change only the number of devices and how long access lasts. There is one speed, and no business product, static IP, voice service or router choice.

Customer reviews4.5

3.5 from 12 reviews on Google, read 21 October 2026. Held lower because the sample is small and two of the three written reviews from 2026 are critical.

Reliability and uptime4.5

Ilitha owns its fibre and mesh, which counts for something. Held back by no uptime commitment, policy room to limit throughput, and reviews describing a week-long outage and unstable Wi-Fi.

Support quality5.0

Phone, WhatsApp, email and social channels, with a stated aim of answering within minutes. Capped because no support hours are published and a reviewer describes waiting on a branch for a fix.

What real customers say

Critical review on a fault

“No network for a week now but it’s on and when you try communicating with their Mthatha branch they will say ‘we are coming’.”

Twelve ratings, five of them with text, is too few to call a trend, so treat this as a sample rather than a verdict. The one written compliment praises reliability; the complaints are about unstable Wi-Fi in the home, throttled traffic and a slow response to an outage. The listing sits at the Rosebank head office rather than on the network itself.

How Ilitha works

Three parts of the service decide whether it suits your home: the network, the way you pay and the plan you pick.

Network

Fibre to the home, Wi-Fi down the street

Ilitha runs fibre into homes and an Ilitha modem in each one, and designs the network as a mesh so customers in the rollout area can stay on Ilitha Wi-Fi as they walk around the neighbourhood.

Paying

Prepaid like airtime

Sign up in the web app with an SMS one-time PIN, then buy access in the portal with a 1ForYou Flash voucher, a card or EFT, or at Shoprite, Pep, Ackermans or a local spaza shop.

Plans

Priced by devices, not speed

Every plan runs at up to 20 Mbps per device. What changes is how many devices can connect, from three on Amaya to fifteen on Pholas Plus and unlimited on Ekhaya, and how long the access lasts.

Prepaid, no contract
Uncapped data
Up to 20 Mbps per device
Daily, weekly and 30-day access
60-day Ekhaya option
Mesh Wi-Fi in the rollout area
Flash voucher top-ups
Card and EFT in the portal
Retail top-ups
WhatsApp support line

Choose Ilitha if

  • Your home is on the Ilitha network and you want uncapped internet without a debit order
  • Your budget changes month to month and you would rather buy a day or a week at a time
  • Several people in the house need to connect at once on one purchase
  • You top up at a spaza shop or retailer rather than online

Consider another if

  • Your address is outside Mdantsane
  • You need more than 20 Mbps on a single device for work or large uploads
  • You run a business and need a fixed IP, an SLA or a named account manager
  • You want published support hours and an uptime commitment in writing

South African essentials

Four local signals to check before you buy your first top-up.

ICASA licensing

Ilitha does not publish licence numbers on its website. A network operator should hold ECNS and ECS licences; ask for the numbers if it matters to you.

Coverage

The FAQ says the service is only available in Mdantsane for now. Confirm your street is connected before you buy, because access only works on the Ilitha network.

Load-shedding

Ilitha publishes no backup-power detail for its network or the home modem. Ask how long the modem stays up when the power goes, or plan for a small UPS.

Terms and VAT

The Product Terms say prices include VAT and may change on reasonable notice. Data does not carry over and cannot be converted to cash.

FAQ

Short answers to the questions people ask before signing up.

Is Ilitha Telecoms any good?

It scores 5.3 out of 10 on our rubric. The prepaid, no-contract pricing is clear and cheap, but coverage is limited to Mdantsane, every plan is capped at 20 Mbps per device, no uptime commitment is published and recent Google reviews are mixed.

How much does Ilitha cost?

On the fibre page, Amaya costs R10 for a day, R60 for a week or R200 for 30 days for up to three devices. Pholas is R325 and Pholas Plus R450 for 30 days, and the Ekhaya premium plan is R310 for 30 days or R650 for 60 days where available. The Product Terms page lists lower prices for some products, so check the price in the portal before you pay.

Where is Ilitha available?

Ilitha’s FAQ says the service is currently only available in Mdantsane in the Eastern Cape. It has announced investment to extend its fibre network to 500,000 low-income homes, starting in the Eastern Cape.

How do I recharge Ilitha?

Log in at portal.ilitha.com, choose a product and pay with a 1ForYou Flash voucher, a card or EFT. Vouchers are sold at local spaza shops, and Ilitha also sells through Shoprite, Pep and Ackermans.

Does Ilitha have a contract or data cap?

No. Products are once-off with no recurring debit, and they are uncapped with no fair usage policy applied today. Ilitha’s acceptable use policy still allows it to limit throughput, and it may introduce a fair usage policy on notice.
