Switch Telecom Review
A buyer-focused review of Switch Telecom’s South African Hosted Switchboard, including R260 per 10-extension block pricing at R26/ext plus the mandatory SIP trunk from R100, the new Microsoft Teams Direct Routing offering, ICASA-licensed own-network operation since 2007, and whether it fits your business.
Is Switch Telecom worth shortlisting?
Yes. Switch is worth shortlisting for South African businesses where per-extension cost is a top decision driver, where local ICASA-licensed network ownership matters, and where a named-consultant relationship with a Sandton-based team beats a generic 24/7 ticket portal. The R260 per 10-extension block model produces the lowest verified effective per-extension Cloud PBX rate on our shortlist at R26/ext before the mandatory SIP trunk from R100, and the recent Microsoft Teams Direct Routing offering closes the biggest historical feature gap.
- Founded2006, Bryanston, Sandton
- NetworkOwn ICASA-licensed voice network since 2007
- Starting costR260 / 10 extensions / month (R26/ext) plus a mandatory SIP trunk from R100 — R360/month at 10 extensions before calls
- ProductsHosted Switchboard, VoIP Line, SIP Trunk, Cloud SBC for Teams
Switch wins on the spreadsheet and now closes its biggest feature gap.
Switch Telecom has run its own ICASA-licensed voice network out of Sandton for 19 years. In a category full of resellers riding someone else’s trunks, that is worth noting on its own. What makes it worth a closer look is how Switch prices the Hosted Switchboard: by the ten-extension block, on a month-to-month contract, with free installation. The maths comes out to R26/ext effective, the lowest verified per-extension Cloud PBX rate on our SA shortlist — though the switchboard cannot run without a Switch VoIP SIP Trunk on top, from R100 a month, which every buyer needs to budget for. And the new Cloud SBC for Microsoft Teams Direct Routing (R900/month flat) closes the one big watch-out the previous review had to flag.
Is Switch likely to suit you?
Good fit: Switch’s R26/ext block pricing (plus a mandatory SIP trunk from R100) and named-consultant model should land near the top of your shortlist.
Pros and watch-outs
What Switch does well, and where to push back at quote stage.
- R260 per 10-extension block produces the lowest verified effective per-extension Cloud PBX rate on our SA shortlist at R26/ext, before the mandatory SIP trunk from R100 that every deployment needs.
- Own ICASA-licensed voice network since 2007, with a wholesale arm that sells trunks to other licensed operators.
- Microsoft Teams Direct Routing via Cloud SBC (R900/month flat, regardless of user count) added late 2025: closes the biggest historical feature gap.
- Month-to-month contracts on every published service, with free installation and free remote support.
- Named-consultant relationship model and a customer base with notable five-to-ten-year tenure visible in public reviews.
- Reseller and Wholesale partner programmes for IT channel partners building a VoIP offering under their own brand.
- The Hosted Switchboard cannot be bought on extensions alone. Every deployment needs a Switch VoIP SIP Trunk on top, from R100/month for 4 concurrent channels, so a ten-extension site starts nearer R360/month than R260 before a single call is made. Price the trunk into any comparison against providers whose seat price includes trunking.
- Switch publishes a click-to-dial browser extension for Chrome, Edge and Firefox that turns detected numbers on any web page, including a CRM screen, into click-to-call links. There are no native dialer connectors for Salesforce, HubSpot, Zendesk or Freshdesk, so CRM calling works through the extension rather than a built-in integration.
- No contractual uptime SLA with service-credit remedies on the public surface. If a tender requires a published uptime number, negotiate one directly.
- No dedicated contact-centre tier with predictive dialer, pause codes, dispositioning or workforce management.
- Published support hours are Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm, by phone and email, with weekend and public-holiday standby cover for Business and Corporate accounts on an SLA. Round-the-clock operations should confirm the standby terms at quote stage.
Score breakdown
Four categories that decide whether Switch earns a slot on your shortlist – weighted to the buying evidence a South African SME actually uses.
R260 per 10-extension block, free installation, month-to-month, at R26/ext before the mandatory SIP trunk from R100 — the lowest verified effective per-extension Cloud PBX rate on our SA shortlist.
Hosted Switchboard core feature set plus browser and mobile softphone, recording, IVR and reporting. Cloud SBC for Microsoft Teams Direct Routing closes the historical Teams gap.
Google 4.8/5 across 71 reviews, well above the Google cohort, though the distribution is polarised — 67 five-star and 4 one-star, with nothing in between. No computed HelloPeter TrustIndex.
Has run its own ICASA-licensed voice network since 2007, with multi-data-centre redundancy and national points of presence; capped below 9.0 for the absence of a published uptime SLA.
Google verbatim praises speed of resolution, with a named consultant and an 0800 line; below 9.0 because support is not 24/7.
Pricing and call rates
Everything you’ll actually pay – block pricing, the mandatory SIP trunk, call packages and optional Teams Direct Routing. Start here: the Hosted Switchboard cannot be bought on its own. Ten extensions at R260 plus a 4-channel trunk at R100 is about R360 a month before calls, excl. VAT. Channels are sized to concurrent calls rather than headcount, so a busy site may need more than four and a quiet one fewer — but a trunk is always required. Model the first month before you ask for a quote. All figures verified at switchtel.co.za on 17 May 2026.
| Cost area | Published rate | Buyer question | Risk level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hosted Switchboard | R260 / month per 10-extension block (excl. VAT) — requires a SIP trunk, priced separately | Have you budgeted for the SIP trunk on top of the block, and does the block model match your headcount? | Trunk required |
| Effective per-extension | R26/ext at 10, 20, 30 extensions and beyond, plus the mandatory SIP trunk | What is your actual extension count today, your 12-month projection, and the trunk cost on top? | Trunk required |
| VoIP Line (single line) | From R52 / line / month | Is a single shared line enough for a small office, or does the team need extension-level routing? | Clear signal |
| VoIP SIP Trunk | From R100 / 4 channels / month | How many concurrent channels does your existing PBX actually need at peak? | Confirm volume |
| Cloud SBC (Microsoft Teams Direct Routing) | R900 / month flat, regardless of user count | How many Teams Phone Standard licences does Microsoft want from you on top? | Confirm MS licences |
| Outbound call package 1 | 30-second increments, 60-second minimum — 24c landline, 43c mobile, 13c on-net (excl. VAT) | Are your typical calls long enough that the 60-second floor does not hurt you? | Model usage |
| Outbound call package 2 | Per-second billing from the first second — 26c landline, 52c mobile, 15c on-net (excl. VAT) | Does your operation make many short dispatch or confirmation calls? | Model usage |
| Installation fee | FREE on every product | Is hardware separate (it is), and do you want bring-your-own or Switch-supplied handsets? | Clear signal |
| Contract | Month-to-month on every service | Are you free to walk if the experience doesn’t match the rate card? | Clear signal |
What real customers say
Unedited Google reviews of Switch Telecom – what customers say in their own words, with the source link on every card.
“Staff are courteous, friendly and knowledgeable, queries are resolved quickly, they reply to emails timeously, just an all round highly efficient and professional service provider. I don’t even want to compare pricing with other providers, I’m that pleased with the service I receive from Switch. Look, I very seldom give a 5-star rating because I believe there is always room for improvement. I’m sure that applies to Switch as well but, for now, I just can’t think of anything reasonable they can improve on. Highly recommended!”
“I continue to be impressed with the wonderful service from Switch Telecom. Good personal service is rare these days. I appreciate a company that doesn’t just tell me to ‘do it on the app’!”
“I want to compliment Switch Telecom for their outstanding customer service. From start to finish, their team was extremely friendly, approachable, and helpful. Every question I had was answered clearly, and the support over the phone was [excellent].”
The Switch product line
Switch runs its own voice infrastructure rather than reselling someone else’s stack. Three core products for businesses, plus an enterprise add-on that finally answers the Microsoft Teams question.
Block-priced Cloud PBX
R260 per 10-extension block plus a mandatory SIP trunk from R100, free installation, month-to-month. Browser and mobile softphone included for every extension, with up to three concurrent registrations per extension, so a desk phone, a browser and a mobile can all stay live on the same number. That combination doubles as load-shedding cover: when the desk phone loses power, calls continue on the mobile or browser softphone, and multi-branch failover is included at no extra cost. Compatible with most SIP handsets. Switch also provides APIs to enterprise clients on request, though no public developer documentation is published.
For businesses with an existing PBX
From R100 per 4 channels / month. Use Switch’s licensed voice network to terminate calls on an on-premise PBX or compatible VoIP gateway. Direct dial-in numbers available.
Teams Direct Routing, flat fee
R900 / month flat, regardless of user count. Connects Microsoft 365 Phone System to the Switch network. Requires a Switch SIP trunk + Microsoft Teams Phone Standard add-on licences per user.
Per-extension cost and own-network ownership are your top two drivers.
- You are shortlisting between 10 and 100 extensions and want the lowest verified effective per-extension Cloud PBX rate in the SA market.
- You need an ICASA-licensed own-network provider for compliance, audit or perceived-reliability reasons.
- You value a named-consultant relationship over a generic 24/7 ticket portal.
- You are standardising on Microsoft Teams and want Direct Routing with a flat monthly fee rather than per-user pricing.
Native CRM dialer integration outranks per-extension cost.
- Your sales team lives inside Salesforce, HubSpot, Zendesk or Freshdesk and needs one-click connectors at the entry tier.
- You are running an outbound-led contact-centre operation that requires a predictive dialer, dispositioning and workforce management.
- Your tender requires a published contractual uptime number with service-credit remedies on the public rate card.

FAQ
Short answers for the questions buyers typically ask before requesting quotes.
How does Switch’s block-pricing model actually work?
Switch publishes one Hosted Switchboard tier: R260 per 10 extensions per month, excl. VAT, with a Switch VoIP SIP Trunk priced separately on top. The price covers the block rather than the seat, so the effective per-extension cost stays at R26 as you scale. Ten extensions costs R260. Twenty costs R520. To that you must add a Switch VoIP SIP Trunk, from R100 a month for 4 concurrent channels — the Hosted Switchboard does not work without one, so a ten-extension site starts at R360 a month before calls.
Does Switch integrate with Microsoft Teams?
Yes, as of late 2025. Switch publishes a Cloud SBC for Microsoft Teams Direct Routing at R900/month flat regardless of user count. The setup requires a Switch VoIP SIP Trunk plus a Microsoft Teams Phone Standard add-on licence per user on the Microsoft side.
Does Switch Telecom require a contract?
No. Every published Switch service runs month-to-month, with no long-term lock-in and free installation on the Cloud PBX product line.
Is Switch ICASA licensed?
Yes. Switch’s first ICASA operating licence was issued in 2007. The company operates its own voice network with multiple points of presence and interconnects across South Africa.
What hardware works with Switch?
Switch supports most SIP handsets and softphones, plus a browser-based softphone and mobile softphone included with every extension at no extra charge. Grandstream desktop and cordless handsets are available directly from Switch from R897 incl. VAT.
How do Switch’s outbound call rates work?
Switch publishes two outbound call packages. Package 1 bills in 30-second increments with a 60-second minimum at 24c to landlines and 43c to mobile (excl. VAT), suited to long-call workflows. Package 2 bills per second from the first second at 26c to landlines and 52c to mobile (excl. VAT), suited to short-call operations like dispatch and confirmation calls. Switch also publishes unlimited packages — lines at R160 and R300, and trunks at R1,000, R2,500 and R5,000 for 4, 8 and 16 concurrent calls — covering unlimited SA local, national and mobile calls plus selected international destinations, subject to a fair-use policy and excluding outbound call centres.
