Smart Idea — Yeastar phone systems and ECN BusinessCall voice from Kyalami, Cape Town and Durban
Smart Idea is the office-equipment business that traded for decades as Panasonic Business Systems inside the Reunert group and went independent in 2017. Alongside copiers, interactive screens and CCTV, it sells Yeastar and Yealink phone systems, carries calls as an accredited ECN service provider under the BusinessCall name, and offers business fibre. It has branches in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, and it quotes rather than publishes prices.

Smart Idea suits offices that already lease equipment from it and want one service contract
Smart Idea is not a telecoms specialist; it is an office automation company with a voice desk. That has a practical upside. If your copiers or boardroom screens already come from its Kyalami, Plattekloof or Westville branch, adding a Yeastar cloud PBX or an on-site S-series box puts the phones on the same rental agreement and the same technicians. The calls themselves run on ECN, which Smart Idea resells as BusinessCall with per-second billing from the first second and no minimum call charge. What you cannot do is price any of it from the website: there is no handset, extension or call-rate figure, and the fibre page does not say whose network it uses. The BusinessCall brochures date from 2021, and the site still lists Panasonic PABXs next to Yeastar. Ask for an ECN rate card, a per-extension monthly figure over the rental term, the fibre network at your address and response times outside the three metros, then set it beside other VoIP quotes.
Who Smart Idea is a fit for
- Businesses and schools in Gauteng, Cape Town or Durban that already rent printers or interactive screens from Smart Idea.
- Sites with a working PABX that want cheaper per-second calls over ECN first and a full IP phone system later.
- Buyers who prefer to finance hardware over 12 to 60 months rather than pay up front.

How much does a Smart Idea phone system cost?
Smart Idea does not publish prices for its Yeastar systems, Yealink handsets or BusinessCall calls; each product page asks you to request a quote (checked 4 November 2026). It offers rental from 12 to 60 months or outright purchase, so ask for the monthly cost per extension over the full term and the call-rate card before you compare. For reference, the 8 verified VoIP providers on WhichVoIP that do publish prices charge R50–R499 per month for a line or SIP trunk, with calls billed per minute, so expect a quote in that band. Compare published prices or get up to 3 quotes.
Is Smart Idea the same company as ECN?
No. Smart Idea is an accredited ECN service provider: it sells, installs and invoices voice minutes that run on ECN’s network, under the BusinessCall name. Because the calls run on ECN, WhichVoIP’s ECN review is a useful companion read.
Can I keep my existing PABX and numbers?
BusinessCall is designed to plug into an existing analogue, digital or SIP-capable PABX, so you can change the call carrier first and replace the phone system later. Geographic number porting is supported.
Does Smart Idea sell fibre?
Yes. It sells Business Fibre, Enterprise Fibre, wireless links and LTE, and says coverage reaches most of seven provinces, with up to 15% off for existing clients. It does not publish fibre prices or name the networks it uses, so ask which one reaches your premises.
Where are Smart Idea’s offices?
Its head office is at Kyalami Business Park in Johannesburg (011 581 9000), with branches at Tygerberg Office Park in Plattekloof, Cape Town (021 200 7000), and Derby Downs Office Park in Westville, Durban (031 941 1850). Its FAQ says 24/7 service applies in the branch areas only.
How does Smart Idea compare with other VoIP providers in South Africa?
Its strengths are three metro branches, decades in office equipment and the option to roll phones into an existing rental. It publishes no prices and no licence of its own, so weigh a quote against scored providers in the VoIP comparison.
