Telkom Business alternatives
Looking past Telkom Business for your office phones, or working out whether the incumbent’s cheap headline rate holds up once you read the contract? Here are four South African providers worth comparing, each ranked by what it is genuinely best at: price, features, reliability, and how openly it is priced. (Cloud PBX just means a business phone system that runs over the internet instead of old phone lines.)
The best Telkom Business alternatives in South Africa are Switch Telecom, for the lowest published price on its own licensed network; Centracom, for carrier-owned reliability from one supplier; 3CX, if you want to run the platform yourself; and Telviva, for busy phone teams that need contact-centre tooling. Telkom’s prices are unusually open – PABX Cloud from R65 a month, unlimited VoIP at R145 – so choose on what its 1.15-star public review record puts in doubt: service and reliability, where every alternative here scores higher.
- Lowest price – Switch Telecom
- Reliability & one supplier – Centracom
- Run it yourself – 3CX
- Busy phone teams – Telviva
Stay with Telkom Business if you genuinely need one supplier across fixed voice, mobile and fibre, want a countrywide retail counter to walk into, and would rather deal with a JSE-listed incumbent than a smaller specialist.
Whichever you pick, you can add WhichVoIP AI Reception – our own AI answering service, not one of the providers compared here – on top of any of them.
What is Telkom Business?
Telkom Business is the business arm of Telkom SA SOC Limited, the JSE-listed South African incumbent founded in 1991 out of the old Posts and Telecommunications split and headquartered in Centurion. It sells fixed voice, Cloud PBX switchboards, mobile and business fibre, and owns the wholesale fibre network Openserve, which makes it the only supplier in this comparison that can put voice, mobile and the line itself on one bill. It scores 6.5/10 in our review.

Score breakdown key: PRICE = pricing value, FEAT = feature set, RELY = reliability, SUPP = support quality. Each is scored out of 10, with pricing value and feature set weighted most (25% each), customer reviews 20%, reliability and support 15% each; the green figure is each provider’s leading dimension. Scores are pulled from each provider’s live WhichVoIP review, verified August 2026 and re-checked against the WhichVoIP record on 4 September 2026. Telkom Business ties on 7.0 across pricing, features and transparency, so the leading dimension shown is the one its review identifies as its best fit – single-supplier breadth. Note that the terms differ: the Telkom figure is its published PABX Cloud switchboard from R65 a month, on contract, while Switch bills R260 per ten extensions, month-to-month – an effective R26 an extension before its SIP trunk from R100. Telkom’s separate Unlimited VoIP calling plan is R145 a month month-to-month, and the IP Voice service itself is free on a Telkom internet bundle or R50,44 a month on another ISP, with call rates on top. Its on-premises iPECS eMG100 switchboard starts at R659 and lists at R691 a month over 36 months. Centracom and Telviva are quote-based and 3CX is licence-based, so their per-line cost is confirmed on request. Rates exclude 15% VAT unless stated otherwise.
What actually pushes a business off Telkom Business?
Feature lists rarely explain a real switch. Businesses move providers for three structural reasons: no enforceable uptime guarantee, a hardware or ownership model that does not fit, or having to run voice and connectivity as two separate contracts. Here is how Telkom Business and the four alternatives actually compare on those three.
| Provider | Uptime SLA | Hardware & ownership | Bundled connectivity |
|---|---|---|---|
| Switch Telecom | No published SLA with service credits – a “Business & Corporate” standby tier exists but carries no numeric guarantee. | Softphone from day one; desk phones are optional, bought outright (R897–R2,967), never leased. | No – voice/UC only, no connectivity of its own. |
| 3CX | No SLA to publish – it is software you or your host run, so uptime is whoever is hosting it, not 3CX’s promise. | Full control: on-premise, self-hosted, or 3CX-hosted, bring your own trunk. | No – BYO-trunk by design, always a separate purchase. |
| Centracom | Publishes a 99.9% uptime target – get it in writing as a contractual SLA with credits before treating it as a guarantee. | BYOD – works on your existing IP phone, softphone, or mobile app. | Yes – sells voice, data and connectivity as one contract, the same bundled idea Telkom Business sells at national scale. |
| Telviva | No numeric SLA published – “uptime guarantees” are referenced qualitatively, without a percentage or remedy. | Device-agnostic – any device, any mode, no proprietary hardware required. | No – UCaaS/CCaaS only, connectivity is your own. |
| Telkom Business | No numeric uptime % published on its SME self-service Fibre/Voice catalogue. A third-party industry profile describes its enterprise-tier fibre as “SLA-backed,” but this could not be independently confirmed on a Telkom-owned page. | Router/ONT typically included with contract fibre packages; most plans are 12–24 month contracts with hardware bundled into the term. | Yes – sells packaged Fibre+VoIP combos directly on its own catalogue, plus standalone IP Voice “offered on any broadband access.” |
Structural facts verified against each provider’s own site, August 2026. Centracom’s uptime figure is presented as published by Centracom and has not been independently confirmed as a contractual SLA with service credits – treat it as a claim to verify, not a guarantee. Telkom Business’s enterprise SLA claim comes from a third-party source, not Telkom’s own site, and is similarly unconfirmed.
Which Telkom Business alternative fits you?
Answer two quick questions for a pick, or read the plain guide below it.
- Choose Switch Telecom if you want a published, low per-line price and only need voice – its uptime SLA is not published either, so like Telkom Business the number is not confirmed, but its support-quality track record is a stronger reason to move than price alone.
- Choose Centracom if you want the bundled voice-plus-connectivity idea Telkom Business already sells, from a smaller, more specialist carrier with a 24/7 service desk – ask for its 99.9% uptime figure as a written, credited SLA.
- Choose 3CX if the real draw is not owning your own platform – on-premise, self-hosted or 3CX-hosted, you control it end to end instead of depending on anyone else’s SLA at all.
- Choose Telviva if what you actually need is contact-centre tooling – voice, video, chat and WhatsApp in one locally hosted platform, without Telkom Business’s wider national-carrier contract.
- Stay with Telkom Business if the packaged Fibre+VoIP combo already suits you – but weigh that against its support-quality track record specifically, which is the weakest of any provider compared here.
The four alternatives in detail
Switch Telecom
Strength: A published hosted switchboard at R260 per ten extensions a month with no installation fee and month-to-month terms – an effective R26 per extension, which undercuts Telkom’s R65 PABX Cloud entry and does it without a contract, run on its own ICASA-licensed voice network.
Watch-out: The switchboard needs a VoIP SIP trunk on top, charged separately from R100 a month for four channels, and calls are billed per minute – so price your real minutes rather than the headline rate.
Switching trigger: No published uptime SLA either, so like Telkom Business the number is not confirmed – but the real draw is South African ownership and support quality, not price alone.
I continue to be impressed with the wonderful service from Switch Telecom. Good personal service is rare these days.Di Kilpert, Google review, July 2025
Centracom
Strength: Connectivity and voice from a single vertically integrated carrier, with 99.9% published core-network uptime and a 24/7 service desk – the closest thing here to Telkom’s one-supplier logic, but at a scale where you can still reach a person.
Watch-out: Pricing is quote-based, so there is no published per-line rate to compare up front, and its public Google rating runs low on a pattern dominated by cold-call complaints from non-customers rather than service issues from clients.
Switching trigger: Sells the same bundled voice-plus-connectivity model Telkom Business does, at smaller scale. Its 99.9% uptime is a published target, not a confirmed contractual SLA – get it written in with service credits.
We recently had an incredible experience with Centracom and felt compelled to share. The level of service provided was excellent, from start to finish.Verified customer, Google review, May 2025
3CX
Strength: Licensed by simultaneous call rather than per user, self-hosted or in the cloud, free for up to 10 users, with a published price list, an instant-quote tool and deep CRM integrations built in – no rented switchboard and no contract term to sit out.
Watch-out: It is a platform, not a managed service – you or a certified reseller handle setup, numbers and support, and pricing is euro-denominated with local reseller markup on top.
Switching trigger: Full deployment control – on-premise, self-hosted or 3CX-hosted – is the actual draw. There is no SLA to compare because you, or your host, own the uptime outcome.
4.4 stars across 546 reviews: IT buyers consistently praise the cost savings, the flexibility and the ease of use, alongside strong CRM integrations.G2 software-buyer rating, 546 reviews
Telviva
Strength: Managed unified communications with real contact-centre tooling – voice, video, chat and WhatsApp in one login, with the deepest CRM and Microsoft Teams integration stack in the local category, including the Teams calling path Telkom’s public Business plans do not cover.
Watch-out: Quote-based per-user pricing with a once-off setup fee, so it is overkill for a small office that just wants dial-tone, and its perfect public rating rests on a small sample.
Switching trigger: No numeric SLA published here either – the pull is contact-centre capability, not a stronger uptime commitment than Telkom Business’s.
Great ICT provider with awesome support team.T231, Google review, 2018 – more recent Telviva reviews are shorter but consistently positive
