The short answer

What are the best alternatives to 3CX?

The best 3CX alternatives in South Africa are Switch Telecom, for a hosted switchboard, SIP trunk and support desk from one ICASA-licensed company at an effective R36 per extension; Centracom, for voice and connectivity under one contract with a 24/7 service desk; Telviva, for a locally hosted platform that adds video, chat, WhatsApp and contact centre to voice; and Yeastar, for the same deployment-flexible platform model as 3CX, sold in rand per user through a South African reseller. 3CX scores 7.9 on its published price list and feature depth, so switch on structure, not score: leave when you no longer want to own the trunk, the hosting and the partner relationship that 3CX leaves to you.

What is 3CX?

Phone-system and unified-communications software that a business licenses per system and runs itself or through a partner – voice, video, chat and contact centre – priced per simultaneous call rather than per user, with the full price list published on 3cx.com.

3CX is the price-transparency benchmark among platform vendors: the Basic edition is €285 a year for 8 simultaneous calls and up to 40 users – about R11 per user a month at 40 users, converted at the European Central Bank rate on 3 August 2026 – the PRO edition is €380 and the AI edition €550 at the same tier, and a free self-hosted edition covers up to 10 users on 4 simultaneous calls. Prices exclude tax. The editions include multi-level IVR, call recording with listen, whisper and barge, wallboards, pre-built CRM integrations and a published Call Control API. It scores 7.9/10 in our review, with features (8.5) and pricing value (8.0) its strongest dimensions. The structural caveats are what the licence does not include: 3CX is software only, so the SIP trunk, the numbers, the hosting decision and day-to-day support come from a partner or your own IT, the ICASA licence sits with the trunk carrier, it sells no connectivity, and no uptime figure is published – which is why reliability (7.2) and support (7.3) trail.

✓
Stay with 3CX if you have an IT team or a trusted partner to run the platform, more extensions than simultaneous calls, and want the deepest feature set per rand in this comparison – a per-call licence and a free tier for up to 10 users are hard to beat on software cost. Read the 3CX review.

How do the 3CX alternatives compare?

Four vetted alternatives with 3CX as the reference row. Scores are from each provider’s WhichVoIP review on the July 2026 rubric (3CX and Yeastar carry product scores, with no South African review base to score); the entry price is a dated fact from the provider’s own site, or “quote-based” where none is published.

Provider Best for Entry price Strongest dimension Score
Switch Telecom Hosted PBX, trunk and support from one company R260 / 10 ext + R100 trunk Pricing 9.2 8.6
Centracom Voice and connectivity on one contract Quote-based Reliability 9.2 7.4
Telviva Locally hosted voice, video, chat and contact centre Quote-based Features 8.0 7.3
Yeastar Like-for-like platform, rand pricing per user R65 / user (via DSL Telecom) Features 8.5 7.2
3CX (reference) Lowest software cost per user in this group €285 / year per system Features 8.5 7.9

!
Read the prices carefully: the 3CX price is a software licence for the whole system, in euros and excluding tax – the SIP trunk, call charges, hosting (the 3CX-hosted option is priced separately) and any partner support are extra. Switch’s R260 per ten extensions plus the R100 four-channel trunk is the full monthly service before calls, an effective R36 an extension at ten extensions, excluding VAT, sold in ten-extension blocks. Yeastar’s R65 a user a month through DSL Telecom is a managed rand price. Centracom and Telviva are quote-based, so their per-line cost is confirmed on request. Compare the total cost of the stack, not the licence.

Which 3CX alternative fits you?

Match the alternative to the reason you are looking.

You no longer want to run a phone platform: Switch TelecomSwitch sells the hosted switchboard, the SIP trunk underneath it and the support desk as one service from one ICASA-licensed company – R260 per ten extensions plus R100 for the trunk, free setup, month-to-month, with a browser and mobile softphone included for every extension. Nothing to patch, host or license. Note that support runs office hours, Mon–Fri 8am–5pm.
You want voice and the connectivity under it from one supplier: Centracom3CX sells no connectivity, so a 3CX business usually manages a PBX partner, a trunk carrier and an ISP. Centracom sells voice, hosted PBX and connectivity sourced across more than 50 access providers, with a 24/7 service desk and a separate after-hours number.
You use 3CX as a communications hub, not just a switchboard: TelvivaTelviva runs voice, video, chat and WhatsApp on one platform hosted in Teraco data centres in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, with contact-centre packages for inbound, outbound dialling and omnichannel on top, and native CRM integrations – on any device, without proprietary hardware.
You want to keep the platform model with a local SLA: YeastarYeastar is the closest architectural twin to 3CX – on-premise appliance, hosted or self-hosted, bring your own trunk – with a built-in contact centre and open APIs. Through DSL Telecom it is sold per user per month, month-to-month: R65 Standard, R85 Enterprise with a managed SLA and free remote support, R125 Ultimate with on-site support.

The four alternatives in detail

Switch Telecom – stop running a PBX altogether

Strength: The highest-scored provider in this comparison (8.6) and the clearest exit from a DIY stack: the Hosted Switchboard at R260 per ten extensions and the SIP trunk it runs on at R100 for four channels (R25 per extra channel), with published call rates from 13c on-net, 24c national and 43c to mobiles, free setup, month-to-month terms and porting at R160 a number – all ex VAT, all from a company ICASA-licensed since 2007 that owns the platform, the trunk and the support desk.

Watch-out: The switchboard is sold only in ten-extension blocks, support runs Mon–Fri 8am–5pm with weekend standby reserved for Business & Corporate SLA customers, no contractual uptime SLA is published, and there is no self-serve developer API – the deep platform control 3CX administrators value is not the product.

Centracom – voice and connectivity on one contract

Strength: The reliability case and the one-supplier case together: Centracom holds ICASA credentials and runs its own South African voice carrier infrastructure, states a 99.9% core-network uptime figure, and sells hosted PBX, VoIP and connectivity quoted across more than 50 business fibre, wireless, satellite and LTE providers – with a 24/7 service desk and a separate after-hours line. Its reliability dimension (9.2) is the strongest score on this page.

Watch-out: Pricing is quote-based, so there is nothing to benchmark against the 3CX price list without a quote; it publishes no API, and its public Google rating sits at 3.6 across 66 reviews.

Telviva – a locally hosted communications platform

Strength: Voice, video, chat and WhatsApp on one platform hosted in Teraco data centres in Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban, with contact-centre packages – Connect for inbound and outbound voice, Reach for automatic and predictive dialling, Omni for voice plus WhatsApp, email, web chat, SMS and social – native Salesforce, Dynamics, Zoho, Zendesk, Freshdesk and HubSpot integrations, open APIs, and AI digital agents that hand over to a live agent.

Watch-out: No rand pricing is published – every package is quote-only, and UC bundles carry a R1,500 remote setup fee – support chat runs weekdays 07:00–18:00 with no 24/7 tier published, and it sells no connectivity, so the line underneath is still a separate purchase.

Yeastar – the like-for-like platform swap

Strength: The same deployment choice as 3CX – on-premise appliance, Yeastar-hosted, self-hosted software or your own cloud – with a built-in inbound contact centre, an omnichannel inbox, a 17-metric analytics suite, PCI-compliant recording, open APIs and Linkus apps, and an AI Receptionist add-on in 34 languages. In South Africa DSL Telecom sells it in rand per user per month, month-to-month: R65 Standard, R85 Enterprise with a managed SLA and free remote support, R125 Ultimate with on-site support, R185 Ultimate X with priority SLA.

Watch-out: Per-user pricing costs more than the 3CX licence arithmetic once a system grows, Yeastar publishes no uptime figure, and accountability for a given deployment sits with the reseller and the trunk carrier rather than with Yeastar itself – the same structural pattern as 3CX.

Our verdict

3CX earns its 7.9 by publishing everything a platform vendor can – a full price list charged per simultaneous call, a free tier for up to 10 users and a deep feature set – and nothing here beats it on software cost per user. What it leaves to you is the South African stack: the trunk, the hosting, the support and the accountability when call quality drops. Compare when that stack is the problem: no appetite to run a platform (Switch), voice and connectivity on one bill with a 24/7 desk (Centracom), a hosted communications hub with contact centre (Telviva), or the same platform model sold and supported locally in rand (Yeastar). If you do switch, your trunk and numbers already sit with your carrier, so they move with you.

Our recommendation: Price the whole stack, not the licence. Add your SIP trunk, call charges, hosting and partner fees to the 3CX edition you need, then ask Switch for its total at your seat count – R360 a month for ten extensions before calls – ask DSL Telecom for the Yeastar tier you would need, and ask Centracom and Telviva what the same seats cost on quote.

3CX alternatives: common questions

Why do South African businesses compare alternatives to 3CX?
Rarely on licence price – 3CX publishes its full price list, charges per simultaneous call and offers a free tier for up to 10 users. The usual reasons are structural: 3CX is software only, so the SIP trunk, the numbers, the hosting and the day-to-day support come from a partner or your own IT; it sells no connectivity; pricing is in euros and excludes tax; and no uptime figure is published, so accountability is split between the platform, the trunk carrier and the host when something goes wrong.
What does 3CX actually cost?
The Basic edition is €285 a year for the whole system at 8 simultaneous calls and up to 40 users, PRO is €380 and the AI edition €550 at the same tier, and larger tiers scale by simultaneous calls. That works out to about R11 per user a month at 40 users at the 3 August 2026 exchange rate. A free self-hosted edition covers up to 10 users on 4 simultaneous calls. The SIP trunk, call charges, hosting and partner support are paid separately, and prices exclude tax.
Which 3CX alternative is cheapest?
On published pricing, Switch Telecom: R260 per ten extensions plus the R100 four-channel SIP trunk is R360 a month for ten extensions before calls, an effective R36 an extension excluding VAT, with free setup and month-to-month terms. That is a complete hosted service, where the 3CX licence still needs a trunk, hosting and support added. Yeastar through DSL Telecom starts at R65 a user a month. Centracom and Telviva are quote-based, so neither can be compared on price until the first quote arrives.
Which 3CX alternative keeps an on-premise option?
Yeastar. It matches the 3CX deployment model – on-premise appliance, hosted or self-hosted, bring your own trunk – and in South Africa DSL Telecom sells it with local support from R65 per user per month, with a managed-SLA tier at R85. The hosted providers on this page, Switch, Centracom and Telviva, run the platform for you instead.
What happens to our SIP trunk and numbers if we leave 3CX?
They are already yours. 3CX runs on a bring-your-own-trunk model, so the trunk and numbers sit with your carrier, not with 3CX. A platform swap such as Yeastar can often keep the same trunk; moving to a hosted provider means porting your numbers – Switch, for example, charges R160 excluding VAT once-off per geographic number.
