The 8 cheapest VoIP providers, one at a time

In price order. Each profile says what the entry price actually buys, because a R49 seat and a R50 line are not the same product.

1. Axxess: free to hold, pay only for calls

Axxess VoIP has no monthly line or rental fee. You buy CallTime in monthly amounts of R50, R100, R300 or R500 (VAT inclusive), unused credit rolls over for three months, a free 087 number is included and one SIP account registers on up to six devices. It is a line with credit, not a phone system: no queues, no IVR, no call recording. For a sole trader who wants a business number that costs nothing in a quiet month, it is the floor of the South African market.

2. Innovo Networks: the cheapest published hosted-PBX seat

Innovo’s Hosted PBX Starter is R49 per extension per month ex VAT, with softphone, desk-phone and mobile apps, voicemail-to-email and South African support. Custom at R99 adds call recording, analytics and Microsoft Teams Direct Routing; Enterprise at R149 adds the omni-channel contact centre. The SIP trunk that carries the calls is quoted rather than priced on the site, so get that number with the seat price before you compare it with Switch.

3. Afrihost: the mainstream CallTime line

Afrihost’s Pure VoIP is the same idea as Axxess on the same shared network: the VOIP 50 bundle is R50 a month, with R100, R300 and R500 bundles above it, three-month rollover on unused credit, free calls to other Pure VoIP numbers and a R99 once-off fee to port a number in. No PBX layer. If you already buy fibre or LTE from Afrihost, one invoice is the practical advantage.

4. Switch Telecom: the cheapest full phone system for a team

Switch publishes two ways in. The VoIP Line is R52 a month for a single device on usage-based billing, with Unlimited Lite at R160 and Unlimited Premium at R300. For a team, the Hosted Switchboard is R260 per block of ten extensions on top of a SIP trunk from R100 for four channels – R360 a month for ten seats, about R36 each all in, with free setup and month-to-month terms. Number porting is published at R160 per geographic number. On its own licensed network and the highest WhichVoIP score we give (8.6/10), this is the reference price every PBX quote should be held against.

5. Euphoria Telecom: full feature stack, per-second billing

Euphoria’s Express tier is R65 per extension per month ex VAT and includes per-second billing, IVR, hunt lists, call recording and voicemail-to-email on a platform Euphoria built and hosts in South Africa. The once-off setup is the number to budget for: a R1,500 base fee plus R65 per extension, so ten seats cost R2,150 to switch on. Month-to-month, cancel before the 23rd.

6. NoPBX: prepaid PBX with minutes built in

NoPBX charges R65 per extension per month with 200 minutes included, plus a R90 monthly PBX charge on multi-user systems (single-extension users skip it). Setup is free, the first number ports at no charge, and the service runs month-to-month as real-time prepaid. Ten seats are R740 a month with 2,000 minutes inside, which makes it the cheapest published option once you count the calls a small office actually makes.

7. Telkom Business: the cheapest unlimited plan

Telkom’s IP Voice plan is R145 a month, month-to-month, for unlimited VoIP across one to twenty users. It is a flat plan rather than a per-seat rate card, so it is the outright cheapest option on this list for a team that calls heavily, and the only unlimited product here at a published price. Longer BizTalk and Smart Voice bundles run from R235 to R825 on 24-month contracts; compare those against the month-to-month plan before signing anything.

8. AVOXI: dollar-priced, for international numbers

AVOXI’s Standard tier is a $14.99 monthly minimum plus 3% of voice spend, with virtual numbers from $6.49 – about R280 a month before calls at current exchange rates, and it moves with the rand. It is not the cheapest way to call South Africa; it earns its place for a business that needs inbound numbers in several countries on one platform.

What “cheapest” really means once the line is live

Three things determine your bill more than the headline subscription. Get them wrong and a free line can cost more than a R145 unlimited plan.

• Call charges versus included minutes. Axxess, Afrihost, Switch and Euphoria bill calls on top of the entry price; NoPBX includes 200 minutes per extension; Telkom’s IP Voice includes all of them. Estimate your team’s real monthly minutes before you decide which model is cheaper.
• The trunk and the seat are separate lines on the invoice. Switch prices both (R100 trunk, R260 per ten seats). Innovo publishes the seat and quotes the trunk. Ask for both before you compare a R49 seat with a R36 one.
• VAT discipline. Most providers here publish ex VAT; Axxess publishes CallTime VAT-inclusive. Normalise both sides of a comparison to the same VAT treatment before signing.

Setup, porting and other once-off fees

Most providers publish setup and porting fees somewhere on the site, but they are easy to miss until the first invoice. Euphoria’s setup is R1,500 base plus R65 per extension, so a ten-person office is R2,150 once-off. Switch sets up the Hosted Switchboard and SIP trunk free and ports a geographic number for R160. Afrihost’s port fee is R99. NoPBX sets up free and ports the first number at no charge. Telkom’s IP Voice has no installation fee. Ask for the full once-off list, not just the monthly figure.

What a 10-person office actually pays

The published monthly subscription for ten users, before call charges, from each provider’s own pricing. Call charges depend on your minutes and each provider’s rate card, so they are left out rather than estimated.

Read the table with the calls in mind. Telkom’s R145 is the cheapest line for a team that talks all day. Switch’s R360 is the cheapest real phone system before calls. NoPBX’s R740 already contains 2,000 minutes, which for many small offices makes it the cheapest once the call charges land. The ten CallTime lines at R500 buy no switchboard at all.
