Amazon Leo in South Africa: the Starlink rival that’s playing by the rules
Amazon’s low-orbit satellite network now has a named South African route to your house. Herotel will sell it as evry, powered by Amazon Leo, with a free waiting list open today and a service launch targeted for 2027. Here is what it is, who does what, and what is still unknown.
Can South Africans get Amazon Leo right now?
Not yet. Amazon Leo will reach South African homes as evry, powered by Amazon Leo, sold by Herotel, the country’s largest fixed internet provider. Herotel is targeting 2027 for service launch and has opened a free, no-commitment waiting list at evry.co.za. No pricing has been published yet.
That partner-led route is the whole story. It is also the reason Amazon Leo has a credible path to a legal South African launch while Starlink, three years after arriving in neighbouring countries, still does not.
What Amazon Leo actually is
Amazon Leo is Amazon’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite internet network – its answer to Starlink, and now its consumer brand for the service it spent six years building as Project Kuiper.
Amazon began the project in 2019 and has committed more than US$10 billion to it. In November 2025 it dropped the Project Kuiper name – a nod to the Kuiper Belt beyond Neptune – in favour of the plainer, more recognisable Amazon Leo. The technology and the partnerships did not change; only the badge on the box did.
By early May 2026 Amazon had passed 300 satellites in orbit across a dozen launches, making Leo the third-largest constellation in space. The planned first-generation network is 3,236 satellites flying between 590 and 630 km up – and in early 2026 the US regulator cleared Amazon to add a further 4,500, lifting the long-term plan toward 7,700. Crucially, that orbital height is roughly the same as Starlink’s, which means roughly the same physics: latency of about 30 to 50 milliseconds.
That number is the point. Older satellite internet relied on satellites parked 35,786 km above the equator, which baked 600 ms or more of lag into every connection and made video calls painful and gaming impossible. A LEO network sits low enough that a video meeting, an online game, or a VoIP call behaves much like it would on fibre.
Why Amazon Leo can launch here when Starlink can’t
This is the most important question for South African buyers, and the answer has nothing to do with technology. It is about regulatory strategy.
Starlink is wholly owned by SpaceX and wants to sell directly to consumers. South Africa’s Electronic Communications Act requires 30% ownership by historically disadvantaged South Africans for companies holding the network-service licences satellite internet needs. SpaceX has a global policy against local equity ownership, and on 13 May 2026 the regulator, ICASA, formally rejected the Communications Minister’s attempt to introduce an “equity equivalent” workaround, stating it will not move on the ownership rule without Parliament amending the Act first. In plain terms: Starlink’s licensing path just got longer, not shorter.
Amazon took the opposite approach. Rather than fighting for its own licence, Amazon Leo sells satellite capacity to South African companies that are already licensed and already compliant. Three separate deals now use that capacity, and they do very different jobs. Only one of them ends with a dish on your roof.
Two ways to sell satellite internet in South Africa
Herotel and evry: the route that reaches your house
On 15 July 2026 Amazon announced that Herotel will bring Amazon Leo to South African homes. Amazon describes Herotel as the country’s largest fixed internet service provider, serving more than 350,000 active customers across more than 550 towns on its fibre and fixed-wireless networks. The satellite product carries its own brand: evry, powered by Amazon Leo.
This is the one that matters to a household or a small business. Herotel already holds the licences, already runs the installation crews, and already bills South African customers in rand. Amazon supplies the capacity; Herotel supplies everything between the satellite and your lounge. Herotel says it is targeting 2027 for service launch and that exact dates will be confirmed closer to the time.
Vodacom: coverage extension, not a consumer product
On 2 March 2026 Vodafone and Amazon Leo announced an agreement to use Leo satellites as backhaul for remote 4G and 5G mobile sites, and as a fallback when terrestrial fibre links fail. The first sites are expected to be connected during 2026, starting in Germany and other European markets, with a progressive rollout across Africa through Vodacom.
Read that carefully, because it is routinely misreported. This deal connects cell towers to the network. It is infrastructure that may improve the mobile signal in a remote area, and South Africa is not specifically named in the announcement. You will not buy an Amazon Leo dish on a Vodacom contract, and Vodacom is not the company selling you satellite internet.
Vanu: rural mobile coverage as a service
Vanu signed with Amazon in November 2025 to use Leo as satellite backhaul for its “coverage as a service” model, which lets mobile operators outsource the build and management of rural networks. The focus is Southern Africa, with South Africa as the starting point, and services scheduled to begin in 2026. Amazon puts the scale of the gap at roughly 40% of the rural SADC population with no mobile coverage at all.
Like the Vodacom agreement, this is a tower story rather than a household one. If it works, the visible result is bars on your phone where there were none, not a satellite antenna on your roof.
Amazon isn’t trying to win South Africa’s satellite-internet argument. It’s routing around it – selling capacity to partners who already hold the licences Starlink is still fighting for.

The evry antennas, and how fast they go
Herotel has named two antenna tiers for the South African consumer service. Both use a Ka-band phased-array antenna and need a clear line of sight to the sky, much like Starlink.

For most South African households the evry Nano is the relevant box. At up to 100 Mbps it comfortably handles 4K streaming, video meetings and a normal work-from-home day. The evry Pro adds headroom for a busy household or a small office. The gigabit-class Leo Ultra is not part of the evry consumer range at all – it is the enterprise terminal, the kind used to backhaul a cell tower in the Karoo.
One honest caveat: Herotel has published antenna specifications but not the throughput you will actually see once a cell fills up with customers. Real-world satellite speeds depend on how many people share the same beam, and no South African has tested this network yet.
What Amazon Leo will cost in South Africa
Nobody knows yet, and anyone quoting you a rand figure today is guessing.
Herotel has not published pricing for evry. Neither hardware costs nor monthly subscription rates appear on its evry page, and Amazon has published no South African rate card either. Herotel’s position is that dates and details will be confirmed as the 2027 launch gets closer.
We are not going to fill that gap with an estimate. Satellite pricing moves with the exchange rate, with import duty on the antenna, and with how much capacity Amazon allocates to the region – and every one of those is unsettled. What we can say is that Herotel sells fibre and fixed wireless to more than 350,000 South African customers already, so evry will be priced against local expectations rather than a converted dollar figure.
The other reference point people reach for is grey-market Starlink, imported on a foreign roaming plan. That is not a like-for-like comparison: there is no local billing, no local support, no recourse if the account is cut off, and no guarantee the workaround survives.
Amazon Leo vs Starlink in South Africa
These are the two most-watched satellite services for South Africa, but they sit at very different stages. Here is how they line up on what matters to a local buyer.

Starlink still wins on raw maturity: thousands more satellites, real-world speeds, a global track record, and the fact that a determined buyer can get one working this week. Amazon Leo wins on the thing a South African buyer cannot work around, which is a service you can legally sign up for, from a company that will send someone out when it breaks.
When will Amazon Leo launch in South Africa?
Based on what is public as of August 2026, this is our best read of the timeline.
The infrastructure year. Vodafone expects the first remote mobile sites connected over Leo during 2026, with the African rollout running through Vodacom. Vanu’s rural coverage services are scheduled to begin in the same window. None of this is something a household buys.
The consumer year. Herotel is targeting 2027 for the evry service launch, with exact dates to be confirmed. Expect installations to follow Herotel’s existing footprint and demand signals from the waiting list.
The full 3,236-satellite Gen-1 network reaches operational scale, capacity per beam improves, and coverage widens beyond the areas Herotel prioritises first.

You want a service with local support behind it
Herotel already installs and supports connections in more than 550 towns. That matters more than headline speed on a technology where the antenna has to be sited correctly and someone has to answer the phone when weather knocks the link over.
You have been holding out for a legal Starlink alternative
If you have sensibly avoided the grey-market Starlink workaround, a service that could be switched off at any time, evry is the most credible legal satellite option with a named South African seller attached.

Our verdict
Amazon Leo is the most credible satellite internet option South Africa has on the table, because it is the only one with a licensed local company committed to selling it. The Herotel deal is not a vague memorandum. It comes with a consumer brand, a waiting list, published antenna specs and a named target year.
The honest caveat is timing, and it is a big one. The consumer target is 2027, not this year. What happens in 2026 is infrastructure work – Vodacom connecting remote mobile sites, Vanu lighting up rural towers – and none of that puts a connection at your address. Anyone who needs internet before next year has to solve it with what is on sale today.
