Prices are per month, excluding VAT unless stated, and come from the WhichVoIP provider record. Providers that only quote – however good – are not in this table, because a price you cannot see is not a price you can compare.

How we rank VoIP providers

This list is editorial. Providers cannot pay for a position, and we update the ranking quarterly as prices and products change.

Two rules decide who is on the list. First, the provider must publish an entry price on its own website – we record it as a dated fact and it is the figure you see above. Second, the order is the WhichVoIP score, a five-dimension rubric covering pricing transparency, feature depth against what an SME genuinely uses, contract flexibility, resilience (UPS, mobile-app and call-forward failover so a local outage does not mean missed calls) and local support you can reach in business hours. The same score sits on every provider’s review and on the comparison table.

The providers in detail

Switch Telecom – own licensed network, priced from the trunk up

Switch is the highest-scoring provider we review (8.6/10) and the only one on this list running its own licensed voice network. Its baseline product is the SIP trunk: R100 a month for four channels, R25 per extra channel, with unlimited options from R1,000. The Hosted Switchboard adds seats on top at R260 per block of ten extensions, so a ten-seat office pays R360 a month before calls. Setup is free, the contract is month-to-month, and number porting is published at R160 per geographic number. If you have a round number of users and want the lowest full-stack cost, this is the benchmark.

Euphoria Telecom – one all-inclusive seat price

Euphoria runs its own cloud PBX platform from South African data centres and publishes the entry tier plainly: Express at R65 per extension per month, with per-second billing, IVR, hunt lists, call recording and voicemail-to-email included. The catch is the once-off setup – a R1,500 base fee plus R65 per extension, so ten seats cost R2,150 to switch on. Month-to-month, cancel before the 23rd. For an SME that wants one number on the invoice and the full feature set inside it, the transparency is the draw.

Afrihost – a business line with no PBX

Afrihost’s Pure VoIP is a prepaid CallTime line rather than a phone system: R50 a month buys the VOIP 50 bundle, with R100, R300 and R500 bundles above it, three-month rollover on unused credit, free calls to other Pure VoIP numbers and a R99 once-off port fee. There is no switchboard, no queues and no IVR, which is exactly right for a sole trader or a small office that wants a second South African number on a softphone and nothing more.

Innovo Networks – the lowest published hosted-PBX seat

Innovo’s Hosted PBX starts at R49 per extension per month (Starter), with Custom at R99 adding call recording, analytics and Microsoft Teams Direct Routing, and Enterprise at R149 adding the omni-channel contact centre. SIP trunks and Teams routing are quoted alongside rather than priced on the site, so ask for the trunk cost with the seat price. Softphone, desk phone and mobile apps are included, and support is South African.

Axxess – free to hold, pay only for calls

Axxess VoIP has no monthly line or rental fee at all. You buy CallTime in monthly amounts of R50, R100, R300 or R500 (VAT inclusive), unused credit rolls over for three months, a free 087 number is included and one SIP account can register on up to six devices. It is the same shared-network model as Afrihost’s Pure VoIP, uncontracted, and the cheapest way in South Africa to keep a business number alive with light usage.

NoPBX – prepaid PBX with minutes built in

NoPBX prices Pay As You Go at R65 per extension per month with 200 minutes included, plus a R90 monthly PBX charge on multi-user systems (single-extension users skip it). Setup is free, the first number ports at no charge, and the whole service runs month-to-month as real-time prepaid. For a small team that wants queues and an auto-attendant without a contract, the maths is simple: ten seats are R740 a month with 2,000 minutes inside.

Telkom Business – unlimited VoIP from the incumbent

Telkom’s IP Voice plan is published at R145 a month, month-to-month, for unlimited VoIP across one to twenty users, with a virtual number at R99 and longer-term BizTalk and Smart Voice bundles from R235 to R825 on 24-month contracts. The entry plan is the one to compare: it is the only unlimited-calling product on this list at a published price, and it suits a business that already buys connectivity from Telkom and wants voice on the same bill.

AVOXI – international numbers, dollar billing

AVOXI is the outlier: a cloud voice platform priced in US dollars, with the Standard tier at a $14.99 monthly minimum plus 3% of voice spend and virtual numbers from $6.49. That works out at roughly R280 a month before calls at current exchange rates, and the price moves with the rand. It earns its place for businesses that need inbound numbers in several countries on one platform; for purely South African calling, the local providers above are cheaper and simpler.
