Rain 5G vs fibre: the 2026 business verdict
Rain rebuilt its lineup and quietly put a 30 Mbps cap on the entry plan. Fibre got cheaper and stayed symmetric. Here is the honest head-to-head for the SA business deciding what to run its phone system on.
Should my business run VoIP on Rain 5G or fibre?
Fibre, if your address has it. Symmetric upload, single-digit latency on the best ISPs and SLA-backed business options make it the safer bet for a phone system. Rain 5G earns its place as the fast-deploy or failover line: live the day the router arrives, month-to-month from R679, but capped at 30 Mbps with roughly 50 ms latency.
What Rain actually sells in 2026
The old pitch of fibre-class speed at a bargain price is gone. Rain now sells speed tiers, and the entry tier is capped at 30 Mbps.
Rain’s storefront carries four month-to-month products: unlimited 5G home wifi from R679, the rainOne Unlimited bundle at R995 (home wifi plus a mobile line), The Loop portable wifi at R699 and an unlimited mobile plan from R595. The home wifi range is where the fibre comparison lives, and it now works like this:

Read the fine print the way a buyer should. Rain’s own plan pages say speeds are “best effort and depend on 5G coverage at your address”, and no upload speed is advertised anywhere on them. The routers are “free-to-use”, which means they stay Rain’s property: cancel and you return the device or Rain may lock it.
One more change worth knowing: Rain’s small-business bundle, rainOne work, launched in mid-2024 at R795 with five SIMs. It no longer appears in Rain’s current lineup, and no SLA-backed business tier is advertised today. A business on Rain buys the same consumer product a household does.
What business fibre costs in 2026
Fibre’s story moved the other way: symmetric 100 Mbps now sits under the R1,000 mark, and entry business lines start around R315.
At the retail layer, Webafrica currently advertises 100/100 Mbps uncapped on Vumatel at R979, Openserve at R959 and a 120/120 Frogfoot line at R889, with free-to-use routers and install lead times of 7 to 14 days (some of those prices are promotional for the first two months, so check the revert-to price before signing). At the business end, SLA-backed fibre typically runs R400 to R1,000 a month depending on speed, with entry pricing from R315 for a 10 Mbps Openserve line and enterprise 1 Gbps circuits from about R2,000.
Two things justify the fibre premium for a phone system. First, symmetry: a 100/100 line uploads as fast as it downloads, and outbound voice is upload traffic. Second, the SLA: business fibre products carry uptime commitments and priority support that no 5G consumer plan offers. When the line carries your inbound sales calls, that contract clause is worth real money.
Speed and latency: what the measurements say
Marketing pages sell download numbers. Phone calls care about upload, latency and jitter, and that is where the two mediums separate.
The most recent published Ookla medians for Rain’s fixed 5G network (Q2 2024, reported by MyBroadband) put it at 32 Mbps down, 9 Mbps up and 50.27 ms latency, with download speeds trending down 12% year on year as the network absorbed more users. Fibre ISPs measured on MyBroadband’s own speed test in Q1 2025, across 793,772 tests, averaged 7.41 ms latency at the top of the table (Cybersmart) and stayed under 15 ms across the whole top ten.
A single VoIP call needs about 100 kbps each way, so raw bandwidth is not the constraint on either medium. Consistency is. Fibre is a dedicated strand of glass from your premises to the exchange; 5G is shared radio spectrum where your packets contend with every other user on the cell, and radio conditions shift hour by hour. That contention is what turns up as jitter and the occasional robotic-sounding call.
Why the same call sounds different on glass and radio
To be fair to Rain: 50 ms is perfectly usable for voice. VoIP tolerates one-way latency up to about 150 ms before callers notice. The risk is not the median, it is the variance – and a shared cell at 5pm behaves differently from the same cell at 5am. Fibre’s numbers barely move.

Score it honestly and fibre takes five of nine rows, Rain takes three, and coverage is a draw because both come down to your exact address. The rows fibre wins are the ones a phone system feels every day.

The decision is simpler than the spec sheets make it look. Start with your address, then your tolerance for a bad call.
Pick fibre if calls make you money
A sales team, a support desk, a practice taking bookings by phone: these run on upload and consistency. A symmetric business line at R400 to R1,000 with an SLA is the boring, correct answer, and at 100 Mbps it undercuts Rain’s uncapped-speed tier on price anyway.
Pick Rain 5G when fibre cannot get there, or not yet
New premises with a 14-day fibre lead time, a short office lease, a site the trench never reached: Rain goes live the day the router arrives and cancels month-to-month. For a two-person office doing a handful of calls a day in a strong-signal area, the R679 plan genuinely is enough – a call uses 100 kbps, not 100 Mbps.
The strongest play is both
Fibre as the primary line, Rain as the R679 failover in the router’s second WAN port. The two fail differently – a cut trench does not take down a tower, and vice versa – which is exactly what you want from a backup. Most business routers will fail over automatically and your cloud PBX will not care.
Our verdict
Fibre wins this shootout for business use, and by a wider margin than in 2024. Rain’s restructured lineup caps its affordable tiers at 30 and 60 Mbps, hides upload speed entirely, and prices its only uncapped-speed plan above a symmetric 100 Mbps fibre line. The measured numbers – 9 Mbps median upload and 50 ms latency against fibre’s symmetric links at 7 to 15 ms – settle the VoIP question.
The honest caveat: this verdict assumes fibre reaches your address. Where it does not, Rain 5G is a legitimate primary line and comfortably the best-value uncapped wireless product in its coverage zones, provided you test the signal at your exact premises before you commit. And even fibre-connected offices should think about Rain at R679 as cheap, independent failover.
