Why fibre might not reach you yet

Fibre coverage in South Africa is uneven, and the gaps are rarely about the technology.

A location can miss out because there is little existing infrastructure in remote or low-density areas, because municipal trenching and wayleave permissions are slow, or because rollout costs do not yet justify the build in a low-demand zone. If you sit in a commercial park or a shared building, it is worth asking neighbouring tenants to request a group installation, since aggregated demand sometimes moves a site up an operator’s build queue. Business LTE and 5G fixed wireless

For most offices, mobile-network fixed wireless is the quickest and simplest fibre substitute.

LTE and 5G have improved enough to run a business on. Providers offer business plans with uncapped data (subject to a fair-use policy), static IP options and failover, and installation is usually a matter of days rather than weeks because there is no trenching. The trade-offs are that throughput depends on signal strength and cell congestion, and latency is higher than fibre, which matters for real-time voice and video. A directional external antenna often lifts a marginal signal into a usable one.

5G fixed wireless, where the coverage exists, closes much of the gap: it can deliver fibre-like download speeds and latency in the region of 20 to 40 milliseconds, which is comfortable for hosted voice. LTE remains the more widely available of the two and is the natural interim link while you wait for fibre or 5G to reach you.

Licensed fixed wireless and microwave

When you need fibre-grade reliability without fibre, a licensed point-to-point link is the business answer.

A wireless internet service provider can install a dedicated microwave or licensed-spectrum link between your premises and a nearby tower or fibre point of presence. Unlike consumer LTE, these are sold with a service-level agreement, symmetrical speeds and dedicated (not contended) bandwidth, so they behave much more like a leased line. They cost more and need line-of-sight to the tower, but for a business that cannot tolerate downtime and has no fibre, this is usually the strongest option. Licensed operators hold ICASA ECS and ECNS licences to run their own network.

Satellite: for sites nothing else reaches

If you are genuinely off-grid, satellite is the connection of last resort, and it now comes in two flavours.

Geostationary (GEO) satellite has been available in South Africa for years. It reaches anywhere with a clear view of the sky, but the signal travels to an orbit roughly 36,000 km up and back, so latency is high (around 600 milliseconds), which makes real-time voice and video difficult. Low-earth-orbit (LEO) constellations sit far closer and cut latency dramatically, to the region of 40 milliseconds, making them far more usable for everyday business traffic.

A commercial launch is widely expected around 2027.
