What fixed wireless access actually is

FWA is point-to-point or point-to-multipoint radio between a customer rooftop unit and a Wireless Internet Service Provider's (WISP) high site – not the same as a 4G/5G SIM in a router.

A licensed WISP runs aggregation backhaul (usually fibre or microwave) into towers, masts and rooftop “high sites” across a footprint. Customers install a small rooftop dish or panel that aims at one of those sites, and the link rides on licensed-exempt or licensed microwave spectrum, depending on the WISP's technology mix.

Throughput, latency and contention are all under the WISP's direct control because they own the radio at both ends – that is the key difference between FWA and a generic LTE/5G connection riding on a shared mobile network.

How to choose a WISP, properly

The good WISPs make their licensing, footprint and SLA easy to verify. The shaky ones don't.

Confirm licensing.A network-operating WISP needs an ICASA ECS + ECNS licence. Software-only resellers hold ECS only and ride someone else's network – useful to know who you're really buying from.
Ask for the coverage map and a site survey.A reputable WISP will run a free pre-install survey from your address. If they refuse, walk.
Pin the SLA.What's the throughput guarantee? What's the mean-time-to-repair clock? What's the credit for missing it? Get those three answers in writing.
Test the failover scenario.If you're buying FWA as fibre failover, build the SD-WAN or dual-WAN router config and pull the fibre on purpose. A failover you haven't tested doesn't exist.
