What a softphone actually is

A softphone is just an app that registers to a SIP account and lets you make and take business calls from a laptop or phone. The desk handset is optional.

The confusion starts because vendors market softphones as if each one is a different kind of product. Strip the branding and most do the same core job: register to a SIP server, dial, hold, transfer, and show your contacts. What separates them is not call quality, which is governed by your internet and your provider, but three practical things.

• Who it works with. Some clients connect to any SIP account from any provider. Others are tied to one phone system and are useless without it.
• What it costs. Several are free; one or two charge a subscription or a once-off licence for the polished version.
• What runs it. Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, or a browser. A team that switches between a desk laptop and a mobile needs a client that covers both.

The six most popular softphones, compared

These are the clients SA businesses reach for most. The split that matters: provider-agnostic dialers you can point at any SIP account, versus clients locked to a specific phone system.

Zoiper 5

The default cross-platform choice. Zoiper runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS and connects to any SIP provider. The free tier handles everyday calling; a once-off Premium licence adds TLS and SRTP encryption plus the G.729 codec, which matters if you are on a tight or insecure connection. For most SA businesses that just want a reliable dialer that follows them between providers, Zoiper is the safe first download.

Linphone

Fully open source and free, Linphone covers the same five platforms as Zoiper and adds video, group messaging and conferencing in one app. Because it is built on standard SIP, it interoperates with other systems cleanly. It is the natural pick if you want a no-cost client with unified-communications features and no licence to manage.

MicroSIP

A lightweight, Windows-only client built on the PJSIP stack, with more than 10 million downloads. It supports the OPUS, G.722, G.711 and G.729 codecs and SRTP/TLS encryption, in a footprint a fraction of the size of the others. If your team is all-Windows and you want something that opens instantly and stays out of the way, MicroSIP is hard to beat. The trade-off is no native Mac or mobile version.

Bria

Now owned by Alianza (formerly CounterPath), Bria is the polished, paid option, sold as Solo for individuals, Teams for small businesses and Enterprise for larger deployments. It runs on Windows, macOS, Android and iOS, works with any SIP service, and adds team messaging, presence and call-management tools the free clients leave out. Worth the subscription when you want a consistent, supported app across a whole team rather than a bare dialer.

3CX client

If you already run a 3CX phone system, its client is the obvious choice and comes at no extra cost. One important update: 3CX has retired its standalone Windows and Mac desktop app and now delivers the desktop experience through the redesigned Web Client and an installable Progressive Web App, alongside the Android and iOS apps. The move followed the 2023 supply-chain incident and reduces the attack surface. The catch is the same as always: it only works with 3CX.

Yeastar Linkus

Linkus is the client for Yeastar P-Series and S-Series phone systems, included free with those systems. It runs on Windows, macOS, Android, iOS and the browser, and lets you move a live call between desktop, mobile and desk phone without dropping it. Like the 3CX client, it is excellent inside its own ecosystem and irrelevant outside it.
