Octotel alternatives in South Africa for 2026

Octotel has the strongest customer record of any fibre network operator we score, but it builds only in the Western Cape. Here are the three peer networks to check when Octotel is not at your address, or when you want a figure in writing that Octotel does not publish: Openserve, Evotel and MetroFibre, each scored on the same rubric and described from its own site.

The short answer

What are the best alternatives to Octotel fibre?

Most people who search for an Octotel alternative have one of two problems: their address is outside the Western Cape, where Octotel does not build, or the map shows no Octotel line at their door. In both cases the alternative is a different fibre network, ordered through an ISP that sells on it. We would check Openserve (6.6), Telkom’s national wholesale network and the one most likely to reach an address Octotel misses; Evotel (6.3), which prints its ISPs’ prices and a 99.8% uptime figure on its own site; and MetroFibre (5.9), which has a business fibre ring in Cape Town and a written business SLA. Octotel itself scores 6.5, and if it already reaches you, a different ISP on the same Octotel line is usually the better fix than a new network.

What is Octotel?

An open-access fibre network operator based in Brooklyn, Cape Town, which calls itself the Western Cape’s leading open-access network and says it connects more than 350,000 homes and businesses.

Octotel lays and maintains the fibre, and more than 50 ISPs sell internet access over it. Ordering runs in three steps on its site: check the address on the coverage map (marked “Ready” or “In Progress”), pick an ISP and package, then Octotel’s own team installs the line. It also designs builds for businesses and for body corporates, landlords and developers. It scores 6.5/10 in our review, led by customer reviews (7.5): its Cape Town Google listing averages 4.3 across 1,572 reviews, and it says ISPA voted it the country’s number one fibre network. Pricing value is its weakest score (5.0) because it publishes no rate; on 8 August RSAWEB listed Octotel 25/25 Mbps at R535 a month. Its contact page, read on 30 October, sends every fault to your ISP and gives no support hours, repair time or uptime figure, though it runs a public status page for outages.

✓
Stay on Octotel if your address shows as Ready and your complaint is price, billing or support: those sit with the ISP, and Octotel lets you move to another ISP while keeping the existing line. No other network here has a better customer record. Read the Octotel review.

How do the Octotel alternatives compare?

Openserve, Evotel and MetroFibre against Octotel as the reference row. Scores are from each network’s WhichVoIP review on the July 2026 rubric; the last two columns show what each operator commits to on its own site.

Network Footprint Uptime or SLA on its site Google rating Score
Openserve National, Telkom Group None for end users No listing of its own 6.6
Evotel No published town list 99.8% network uptime stated 3.3 (768) 6.3
MetroFibre Five provinces; 100 km Cape Town ring 95% a year, Basic Business SLA 3.3 (4,069) 5.9
Octotel (reference) Western Cape, 350,000+ connected None stated 4.3 (1,572) 6.5

!
A stated figure is not a guarantee: Evotel’s 99.8% and MetroFibre’s 95% are claims on their own pages, and neither sets out service credits. For home fibre the price and the support you get still come from the ISP on top of the network, so a strong network with a weak ISP can still disappoint. Ask the ISP what it pays back when the line is down.

Which Octotel alternative fits you?

Start with where you are; the rest only matters if more than one network reaches you.

Your address is outside the Western Cape, or Octotel shows nothing thereOctotel is not an option, so check the other three. Openserve is the likeliest to be built past a given address, being Telkom’s national network; Evotel and MetroFibre confirm coverage only by exact address on their own sites.
You run a business in Cape Town and want terms from the network: MetroFibreMetroFibre has a 100 km business fibre ring in Cape Town and publishes a Basic Business SLA of 95% uptime a year with a 24-business-hour maximum repair time. Its SMME fibre runs month to month from 20 Mbps to 1 Gbps.
You want to read prices and service figures before you call anyone: EvotelEvotel’s home page lists what its ISPs charge for 30/30 Mbps, from R475 to R599 a month incl. VAT on 29 October, and its fibre page states a 72-hour average fix time for homes and 24 hours for business lines.
You need one network across branches in several provinces: OpenserveNo other operator here has its reach. Its Fibre Connect product runs from 50 to 500 Mbps and its wholesale contracts are month to month, but you deal with the ISP for everything, including faults.

The three alternatives in detail

Openserve – the national network, with no customer-facing record

Strength: Openserve is the Telkom Group’s wholesale arm and describes its network as the biggest fixed broadband network in South Africa, which makes it the obvious place to look when you are outside Octotel’s province. Feature set is its best dimension at 8.5 and reliability scores 7.5. Its Fibre Connect line is symmetrical up to 200 Mbps, and Prepaid Connect offers a no-contract option at 20/10, 25/25 and 50/25 Mbps in selected areas, now on 30-day vouchers only.

Watch-out: Everything goes through the ISP: its contact page tells you to report faults there and says enquiries get digital replies with no call-backs. It publishes no rate and no end-user uptime figure, and it has no Google listing of its own, so customer reviews are not scored and there is no review quote to show here. The service record that matters is your ISP’s.

Evotel – prices in public and a stated fix time

Strength: Of the four networks, Evotel puts the most on its own pages. ISP prices on its 30/30 Mbps line sit side by side on the home page, its fibre page claims 99.8% network uptime and a 1:1 contention ratio, and it sells business fibre itself: 100/100 Mbps from R2,845 a month ex VAT for up to 30 staff, 200/200 Mbps from R4,650. Pricing value scores 7.0, the highest of the four.

Watch-out: There is no town or province list, so whether Evotel reaches you is a question only its address check answers. None of the figures comes with service credits we could find. Its Sandton Google listing averages 3.3 across 768 reviews, and the newest are about outages; customer reviews score 4.5.

1 Star is even too much for this bad company!!!!!! For 2 days I do not have internet. I must make use of mobile internet that cost an arm and a leg.

MetroFibre – a Cape Town business ring and a written SLA

Strength: MetroFibre is the one alternative here with its own infrastructure aimed at Cape Town businesses, a 100 km fibre ring, alongside a footprint of 500,000+ homes passed by 2024 across five provinces. It is a hybrid operator: open access for ISPs, home fibre sold directly as MetroFibre Direct, and an SMME range that includes the MetroSwitch hosted PBX from R287.50 a month. It runs Experience Stores, a ticket portal and a WhatsApp line on 087 151 4000.

Watch-out: The Basic Business SLA’s 95% uptime floor is low for business use and names no credits, and home prices appear only after an address check. The Centurion Google listing averages 3.3 across 4,069 reviews; store staff get praise, while back-office billing draws the hardest complaints.

I had an outstanding experience with Masindi, my Metro Fibre consultant at Riverside Views store. From the very beginning, Masindi was professional, knowledgeable, and incredibly patient.

Our verdict

Octotel is a network you leave for one reason more than any other: it is not where you are. Inside the Western Cape its 4.3 Google average and named technicians are hard to beat, and a poor ISP on an Octotel line is fixed by changing ISP, not network. Outside the province, or at an address it has not reached, Openserve is the network most likely to be there and scores 6.6 on breadth, Evotel shows you more numbers up front than any of the others, and MetroFibre is the pick for a Cape Town business that wants the network itself to commit to an uptime floor and a repair time.

Our recommendation: Put your exact address into each network’s coverage check. If Octotel is Ready, compare ISPs on it first; if it is not, ask one ISP for the same speed on every network that comes back, and get the installation date, the price after any promotion and the fault route in writing.

Octotel alternatives: common questions

Is Octotel available outside the Western Cape?
Its site describes a Western Cape network only and lists no area outside the province. If you are in Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal or elsewhere, check Openserve, Evotel and MetroFibre by address instead, and order through an ISP that sells on whichever reaches you.
Can I switch ISP and keep my Octotel line?
Yes. Octotel’s contact page has a migrations route for moving to another ISP on the existing line. That is the quickest fix when the problem is price, billing or support rather than the fibre, because no new installation is needed.
Which Octotel alternative publishes an uptime figure?
Two do. Evotel states 99.8% network uptime and average fix times of 72 hours for home fibre and 24 hours for business lines; MetroFibre’s Basic Business SLA sets a minimum of 95% uptime a year and a 24-business-hour maximum repair time. Neither sets out service credits, and Octotel and Openserve state no figure.
Is Octotel cheaper than the alternatives?
The networks do not set the home price; the ISP does. RSAWEB listed Octotel 25/25 Mbps at R535 a month on 8 August 2026, and Evotel’s ISPs charge R475 to R599 a month incl. VAT for 30/30 Mbps (29 October 2026). Compare the same speed from the same ISP on each network at your address.
Which network has better reviews than Octotel?
None of those we score. Octotel’s Cape Town listing averages 4.3 across 1,572 Google reviews; Evotel and MetroFibre both average 3.3, on 768 and 4,069 reviews, and Openserve has no listing of its own. If customer record matters most and Octotel reaches you, stay with it.
