Choppy audio is almost always a network problem, not a provider problem: high jitter, packet loss, or congestion between your office and the platform. Work through it in order, cheapest check first. Choppy audio on an important call is a credibility problem, not just a technical one. The good news is that most of it is fixable in-house.

What actually causes choppy audio

VoIP needs its packets delivered consistently and on time. Three things break that promise, and none of them shows up on a basic speed test.

Everyone checks download speed, but a fast line can still carry terrible calls. The metrics that decide voice quality are latency (the delay before a packet arrives), jitter (the variation in that delay) and packet loss (packets that never arrive). High jitter and lost packets are what your ear hears as the digital stutter. Congestion, where voice fights downloads and video for the same pipe, makes all three worse during business hours.

The seven fixes, in the order that saves you the most time

Run these top to bottom. The early steps are free and fix the majority of cases; the later ones narrow down the stubborn ones before you ever phone your provider.

Measure the right numbers, not just speedRun a quality test that reports ping, jitter and packet loss, and run it several times across the day. Aim for ping under 100 ms, jitter under 30 ms and packet loss under 1%. If those are bad, no provider switch will help until they improve.
Rule out Wi-Fi: test on a cableWi-Fi is the single most common source of jitter. Plug the phone or laptop straight into the router with a network cable and retest. If the cable is clean and Wi-Fi is choppy, the fix is your wireless coverage, not your line.
Give voice an express lane with QoSYour office network is a shared highway. Enable Quality of Service on your router and prioritise voice traffic, so a colleague’s large download cannot crowd out a live call. In practice this is one of the highest-impact fixes available.
Check your line type and contentionOn a contended consumer or small-business package you share the pipe with other users, so quality dips at peak hours. If calls reliably break up during business hours, ask your ISP about an uncontended business line. For call-heavy offices, a dedicated fibre line exclusively for voice traffic goes further still. Running voice alongside email, video streaming and large downloads on a shared pipe means one colleague’s file transfer can degrade every active call. A 50 Mbps business fibre line reserved for voice will outperform a shared 500 Mbps line in call-quality terms. If you can only do one infrastructure upgrade, this is it.
Confirm the codec and handset settingsA codec compresses the audio. G.711 is higher quality and uses more bandwidth; G.729 saves bandwidth at a small quality cost. A mismatch or over-compression causes artefacts. Confirm with your provider which codec suits your line.
Update router and phone firmwareOld firmware on a router or IP phone is a quiet cause of audio faults. Manufacturers ship fixes regularly. Apply the latest stable firmware to both before assuming the fault is upstream.
Protect the power chain, then escalate with evidenceA UPS on the router and fibre ONT prevents the packet-loss burst that follows an unclean power return. If calls are still choppy after all six steps, send your provider the ping, jitter and loss figures, with times, so they can act on data instead of guessing.
Bottom line: a wired test plus QoS resolves the majority of choppy-call complaints in SA offices. Do those two before anything else, and you will know within an hour whether the problem is inside your walls or beyond them.

G.711 versus G.729: which codec for your line

If you have headroom on the line, favour quality. If bandwidth is tight or shared across many calls, the lighter codec keeps everyone clear.

A speed test tells you how fast the pipe is. It says nothing about whether your voice packets arrive on time and in order, which is all that call quality is.

Choppy VoIP is frustrating precisely because it strikes on the calls that matter, but it is rarely a mystery. The fault almost always lives in the path between your desk and the platform, and that path is mostly under your control. Measure jitter and packet loss rather than speed, test on a cable, prioritise voice with QoS, and only then look at the line, codecs, firmware and power. Switching provider before you have done this usually just moves the same network problem to a new logo.
