VoIP gateway
The box that lets old lines and old equipment work with a new phone system. Which direction it converts is the entire buying decision.
What is a VoIP gateway?in VoIP and business telephony
1. A VoIP gateway is hardware that converts calls between the traditional telephone network and an IP phone system. It terminates analogue lines, ISDN spans or analogue extensions on one side and speaks SIP on the other, which lets legacy lines and equipment stay in service on a modern platform.
2. The port type decides the direction. An FXO port accepts a line coming in from the exchange; an FXS port supplies dial tone going out to a telephone. Both are called gateways, and they solve opposite problems.

Get this one distinction right and the rest of the product range explains itself. Get it wrong and you have bought a box that physically cannot do the job.

An ATA is the small end of the FXS family: one or two ports for a single phone or fax. If you need eight of them, buy one gateway rather than eight adapters. If you need to bring lines in, an adapter cannot help you at all, because it has no FXO port.
Digital gateways: E1 and PRI
Larger sites did not buy analogue lines. They bought an ISDN primary rate span, and a digital gateway is what connects one to an IP platform.
- What an E1 carries
- An E1 span has 32 timeslots. Thirty carry voice, timeslot 0 handles framing and synchronisation, and timeslot 16 carries the signalling. Thirty simultaneous calls on one physical connection, which is why a call centre or a large branch was built on one.
- What the gateway does
- Terminates the span, converts the thirty channels to SIP, and hands them to the phone system. Units are sold by span count: one, two or four spans on the common models.
- Why it is a transitional purchase
- Capacity on a span is fixed at thirty whether you use six channels or all of them, and it is billed accordingly. A SIP trunk is sized to your actual concurrency and changed with a support ticket. Most businesses buying a digital gateway today are bridging a contract, not building an architecture.

When you still need one, and when you do not
The honest answer for most new deployments is that you do not. Gateways are bought to protect something that already exists.
- You are mid-migration
- Some lines stay live while numbers port and staff move across. An FXO gateway keeps the old lines answering into the new system so nothing is missed during the changeover, and comes out afterwards.
- You have equipment that needs a real line
- Fax machines, lift emergency phones, alarm panel diallers, gate intercoms, older card terminals. An FXS gateway serves a building full of these from one rack unit. Check for T.38 fax relay if fax matters, and test it under real volume before relying on it.
- You are running a hybrid
- An on-premise PBX kept for internal calls, with SIP trunks for external connectivity through a gateway. Common where a PBX has years of depreciation left and nobody wants to write it off.
- You want a lifeline path
- Some FXO gateways cut a connected analogue line straight through to a handset on power failure, so one phone still works with nothing else running. Modest, and occasionally the reason a site can still call for help.
Where none of that applies, go straight to a hosted platform and skip the hardware. A gateway that exists only because a supplier quoted one is a maintenance liability with a firmware end date attached to it.
Two checks before you buy
Count concurrency, not ports. An eight-port FXO gateway supports eight simultaneous external calls and not one more, and that ceiling is hardware. Pull your call records for the busiest hour of the busiest day, take the peak number of concurrent calls, and size against that with headroom rather than against headcount.
Then confirm ICASA type approval for the exact model. Section 35(1) of the Electronic Communications Act makes it unlawful to use, supply, sell, lease or hire electronic communications equipment in South Africa unless the Authority has approved it, and gateways are frequently sourced grey because the local range is thin. Ask for the approval number in writing, and ask what the firmware support window is, because a gateway with no update path is a device sitting on the edge of your network with known holes in it.
