Start with how your business actually uses the line
Before you compare a single quote, get a clear picture of your demand. The right package falls out of the answers, not out of the price list.
Five questions do most of the work. Answer them honestly and you will already know roughly what tier and type of fibre you need.
- How many people are on the connection at once? Concurrent users, not headcount, drive the number.
- What are the heavy apps? VoIP, video meetings, cloud storage, ERP and hosted desktops each pull differently, and most pull hardest on upload.
- When are the peaks? A connection that copes at 09:00 can crawl at the 14:00 backup-and-video crunch.
- How much do you send, not just receive? Cloud backups, file delivery and hosting live on upload capacity.
- Who works remotely? VPN and remote-desktop users lean on upload and on a stable, low-latency line.
Symmetric vs asymmetric: upload is the business tell
Consumer fibre is built for downloading. Business fibre is built to send as fast as it receives, and that is what your voice, video and backups need.
Many entry-level packages advertise a big download number and quietly throttle the upload. That is fine for browsing and streaming. It falls apart the moment a team runs VoIP, hosts video calls, or pushes nightly backups to the cloud, because those workloads all depend on getting data out. Symmetric fibre gives you equal upload and download, so performance stays consistent in both directions.

A useful rule of thumb: budget roughly 100 kbps of upload per concurrent VoIP call (codec G.711 plus overhead), then add headroom for video and backups. Ten simultaneous calls is only about 1 Mbps of voice, but stack video meetings and a cloud backup on top and a throttled 10 Mbps upload disappears fast.
Dedicated vs contended: the real divide in business fibre
Two packages can advertise the same speed and deliver wildly different experiences. Contention ratio is why.
Contention is how many customers share the same underlying capacity. A lower ratio means fewer people competing for bandwidth, so your speed holds up when everyone is online. Residential fibre is often contended at 1:20 or worse. Business broadband typically improves that to around 1:8. Dedicated (uncontended) fibre gives you a 1:1 ratio: the speed you buy is the speed you get, guaranteed, at any hour.

A business package is a promise about what happens when things go wrong. Read that promise before you sign, because a fast line with no recovery guarantee is a consumer product wearing a suit.
Get the SLA in writing
A genuine business-grade service level agreement should spell out the uptime guarantee (typically 99% to 99.9%), the mean time to repair, fault-resolution timelines and the escalation path when a fix runs late. If a provider will not put an SLA on paper, you are almost certainly looking at a best-effort service regardless of what the sales page says.
Plan for the line going down
Even the best fibre fails sometimes, so build in continuity rather than hoping. A UPS or inverter keeps your router and phones alive through a power interruption, and a secondary connection keeps you online through a cable fault.

On the contract itself, confirm the term (commonly 12, 24 or 36 months), whether you can upgrade or downgrade without penalty, and what happens if you move premises.
