ElevenLabs Review

ElevenLabs Agents is a platform for building your own AI voice agent. It supplies the voices, speech recognition and call handling; you write the instructions, connect your calendar and CRM, and plug in a phone line. For a South African business with someone technical in-house, it is one of the cheapest ways to run a capable agent at volume. The trade-offs: nobody builds it for you, billing is in US dollars with the language model and the phone line charged on top, and support and data hosting sit offshore.

Direct answer

Is ElevenLabs worth shortlisting?

Yes, if someone on your team can build it. ElevenLabs gives you the parts for a very capable voice agent at one of the lowest running costs available to a South African business, on monthly plans you can cancel. The catch is that it is a toolkit, not a finished receptionist: you design, test and maintain the agent and arrange your own phone line. Model a realistic month of calls, including every separately billed item, before you start building.

  • Based inUnited States; no South African office
  • PlatformElevenAgents, its own voice-agent platform; a software platform, not an ICASA-licensed carrier
  • Starting costFree tier, then plans from $6 a month with 75 call minutes; language model and phone line billed separately
  • Public ratingGlobal only: G2 4.5 from 1,233 reviews, Trustpilot 3.0 from 1,166
Quick verdict

The toolkit: the fullest feature set and the lowest running cost, if you build it yourself.

ElevenAgents covers everything a receptionist agent needs and more. Natural voices in 70+ languages that can switch mid-call, calendar booking through Cal.com, CRM connections for HubSpot, Salesforce and Zendesk with Zapier for the rest, live transfer to a person, transcripts, and outbound and batch calling.

You connect your own number over a SIP trunk or through Twilio, so the South African number your VoIP provider already gives you can stay. Each plan takes several calls at once, from six on Starter to twenty on Pro. Feature set scores 8.0 and pricing value 7.0.

The weakness is everything around the software. Nobody builds, tunes or monitors the agent for you, support is self-serve below Enterprise, and there is no South African office. Choosing where data is hosted (the US, EU or India) and a contracted SLA are Enterprise options, and none of those regions is in South Africa. Reliability scores 7.0 and support 4.5, and with only global ratings to go on, customer reviews are not scored.

Pros and watch-outs

What ElevenLabs does well, and where to push back before you commit.

Pros
  • The widest toolset available to a South African buyer: booking, CRM connections, live transfer, transcripts and outbound calling on one platform.
  • A very low cost per extra minute once the agent is built, and plans that run month to month.
  • Several calls at once on every paid plan, so a busy morning does not send callers to voicemail.
  • Works with the number you already have, over your existing VoIP line.
  • A free tier to build and test on before you pay anything.
Watch-outs
  • You build it: prompts, knowledge base, tools and testing are your job, and so is fixing the agent when it gets something wrong.
  • The plan price is not the full bill. The language model and your phone line are charged on top.
  • No South African office, published support hours or local account management on standard plans.
  • Caller data is hosted outside South Africa, which matters for POPIA.

Score breakdown

Five categories that decide whether ElevenLabs earns a slot on your shortlist. The headline is the weighted sum, so you can check the arithmetic.

Pricing value7.0

Fully published and low: a free tier, monthly plans that start in single-digit dollars and one of the lowest per-minute rates available to South African buyers at $0.08 a minute beyond the included allowance. Held back because the language model and telephony are billed separately, burst calls cost double, and dollar billing adds exchange-rate risk.

Feature set8.0

The most complete toolset in the South African comparison: many languages, calendar booking, CRM connections, live transfer, transcripts, outbound and batch calling, and several concurrent calls on every paid plan. Capped because it is a platform rather than a finished receptionist; the buyer designs and maintains the agent.

Customer reviewsNot scored

No South African public rating with enough reviews to score. ElevenLabs is rated on G2 and Trustpilot, but those are global ratings of the whole product range, not a South African service signal. The remaining four dimensions are re-weighted to 100%.

Reliability and uptime7.0

The company runs its own platform, publishes a status page and holds SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certification. Held back because data residency choices and SLAs need a custom contract, and there is no South African region.

Support quality4.5

Self-serve help centre and detailed developer documentation. Held back because priority support needs a custom contract, and there is no South African presence or published response time.

Pricing: low monthly plans in US dollars, with the model and phone line on top

ElevenLabs publishes every plan on elevenlabs.io/pricing/agents, read on 30 September 2026. Prices are in US dollars and exclude taxes. The plan covers the voice platform and a set number of call minutes; the language model that does the thinking and the carrier that carries the call are billed separately, so the plan price is never the whole bill.

Cost area Published rate Buyer question Risk level
Free $0 a month: 15 call minutes, 4 concurrent calls Enough to build and test, not to run a live line Clear signal
Starter $6 a month: 75 call minutes, 6 concurrent calls Whether 75 minutes covers a real month of calls Clear signal
Creator $22 a month ($11 the first month): 275 call minutes, 10 concurrent calls The plan most small offices will need Clear signal
Pro $99 a month: 1,238 call minutes, 20 concurrent calls Scale ($299) and Business ($990) follow for higher volume Clear signal
Extra minutes $0.08 a minute; burst calls above your concurrency limit $0.16 a minute Your busiest hour, and how often you exceed the concurrent-call limit Clear signal
Language model Billed on usage; varies by the model you choose Which model you pick and what it adds per minute Model usage
Phone line At cost from your own provider (Twilio or a SIP trunk) Your VoIP provider’s call rates for calls into the agent Confirm with carrier
SLA and support Custom terms on Enterprise only Whether you can accept self-serve support on a live line Custom contract

Customer reviews: what the public record shows

No customer quotes are shown because there is no South African rating of this service to quote from. This is what the public record holds, sampled 30 September 2026.

G2

4.5 from 1,233 reviews. A global rating of the whole ElevenLabs product range, not of South African voice-agent deployments.

Trustpilot

3.0 from 1,166 reviews, also global. The gap between the two platforms shows how differently buyers experience the product.

South African signal

No South African rating of the voice-agent service could be found, so customer reviews are not scored and the other four dimensions carry the score.

Before you commit

Build a test agent on the free tier and put your own callers’ questions to it before connecting a live number.

What ElevenAgents gives you to build with

A platform of parts rather than a finished product. Every capability below has to be configured by you.

Voices and languages

70+ languages

A large library of natural voices, with agents able to switch language mid-conversation. Test the South African languages and accents you need before going live.

Tools and integrations

Calendars and CRMs

Booking through Cal.com, connections for HubSpot, Salesforce and Zendesk, Zapier for other systems, and custom tools that call your own APIs.

Telephony

Your own number

Connect a SIP trunk from your VoIP provider or a Twilio number. The agent can transfer a call to a person on another number.

Choose ElevenLabs if

  • You have a developer or a technical owner who will build, test and keep improving the agent.
  • You want the most capable agent for the lowest running cost and will model the separately billed items.
  • You already have a VoIP line the agent can answer on.
  • You need outbound calls or several calls at once, not only a receptionist.

Consider another if

  • You want the receptionist built, tuned and supported for you by a local team.
  • You need billing in rand, a South African support line or published support hours.
  • You need caller data hosted in South Africa, or a contracted SLA on a small plan.
  • You want one all-in monthly price with no separate model or carrier charges.

South African essentials

Four local signals to verify before signing.

ICASA licensing

ElevenLabs is a software platform, not an ICASA-licensed carrier. The call reaches it through your own phone line, so the licensed carrier is whichever provider supplies that line; check it at register.icasa.org.za if procurement requires it.

Numbering and porting

No porting is involved. Point your existing number at the agent through your VoIP provider’s SIP trunk. Your number stays with your current provider if you stop using ElevenLabs.

Support hours

Self-serve help centre and documentation. There is no South African office and no published response time, so plan who in your business will fix the agent when it misbehaves.

Contract and data

Monthly plans, cancel any time, paid by card. Caller data is hosted offshore (US, EU or India residency is a large-contract option), so check how call recordings and transcripts are handled under POPIA’s rules on sending personal information abroad.

How this score was built

Scores are editorial guides, not guarantees. ElevenLabs’s 6.8 is the weighted sum of the four scored dimensions above, re-weighted to 100% because no South African public rating could be scored: 0.3125×7.0 + 0.3125×8.0 + 0.1875×7.0 + 0.1875×4.5. Sponsorship has never moved a score on this site, and ElevenLabs is not a sponsor. WhichVoIP’s own AI receptionist is built on ElevenLabs Agents, which is disclosed below; it did not move this score, which uses the same rubric as every AI receptionist on the site.

FAQ

Short answers to the questions buyers ask before choosing an AI receptionist.

What is ElevenLabs Agents?

ElevenAgents is the voice-agent platform from ElevenLabs, a US voice AI company. It provides voices, speech recognition and call handling so you can build your own AI receptionist or outbound agent, connected to your calendar, CRM and phone line.

How much does ElevenLabs cost for a South African business?

ElevenLabs publishes plans from $6 a month for 75 call minutes, with Creator at $22 for 275 minutes and extra minutes at $0.08 each (sampled 30 September 2026, excluding taxes). The language model and your phone line are billed on top, so ask your VoIP provider for its rates and price a full month before building.

Can ElevenLabs answer calls on my South African number?

Yes, through your own telephony. Connect a SIP trunk from your VoIP provider or forward your number to a Twilio number, and the agent answers there. ElevenLabs does not sell South African numbers itself.

Does ElevenLabs speak South African languages?

ElevenLabs supports 70+ languages and can switch language mid-call. Test the specific languages and accents your callers use on the free tier before going live; coverage and quality vary by language.

Why are customer reviews not scored?

ElevenLabs has large global ratings on G2 and Trustpilot, but they cover its whole product range worldwide rather than South African voice-agent deployments. The other four dimensions are re-weighted to 100%.

Is ElevenLabs POPIA compliant?

ElevenLabs holds SOC 2 Type II and ISO 27001 certification, but hosts data offshore: residency in the US, EU or India is available on larger contracts, with no South African region. POPIA puts conditions on sending personal information abroad, so check the data-processing terms before recording South African callers.
