How do you work out the real cost of an AI voice agent?

Add every monthly bill – subscription, minutes beyond the bundle, any separately billed AI model and phone line – on one VAT and currency basis. Add setup, spread over the months you will really stay or the minimum term, whichever is longer. Then divide by the calls the AI resolves without a person, not by minutes.

What are the rules of thumb for AI voice pricing?

If you only remember three things, remember these.

Under about 650–800 AI minutes a month, metered is usually cheaperComparing published South African plans, paying per minute beats a flat fee at low volume, and the flat fee wins above that range – provided it can handle your peak calls.
Unlimited minutes is not unlimited callsConcurrency – how many calls the AI can take at once – is a separate limit. Some unlimited-minute plans handle one call at a time.
Measure cost per resolved call, not per minuteIf the AI fully resolves four calls in ten, each resolved call costs two and a half times as much as each call answered.

How does this calculator work?

It puts two differently structured plans onto the same footing.

  • One currency and VAT basis. Dollar prices are converted at the rate you enter, and plans quoted excluding VAT have 15% added, so both totals are what you would actually pay.
  • Every bill, not just the subscription. Extra minutes, a separately billed AI model and a separately billed phone line are added to the monthly cost.
  • Your real commitment. If a plan’s minimum term is longer than you expect to stay, you are charged for the minimum, and the setup fee is spread across the months you actually pay for.
  • Outcomes, not minutes. Cost per resolved call divides the total by the calls the AI handles without a person stepping in.
